One wire alternator
I would like to simplify my wiring by putting on a one wire alternator. I could not find the answer for a one wire set up. What jumpers or whatever do I need to use on my original external wiring harness to utilize a modern one wire alternator? Is this even possible?
Thanks Rob |

Re: One wire alternator
I have the one wire alternator. I eliminated all wires not being used. I can post picture later if that would help.

Re: One wire alternator
Do you need to upgrade to a larger wire for that upgrade?

Re: One wire alternator
I run a 10awg from mine directly to my starter. Don't hook it up to any guages like the amp guage or anything like that, bad things have been known to happen, I suppose.

Re: One wire alternator
If you have the charging light dash and you install the one-wire then the light will no longer work.
If you have the seven gauge dash and you install the one-wire and wire the alternator output to the battery or positive post or to the starter solenoid then the battery gauge will not work. Here is how I do my alternator conversions very clean and simple. The stock factory wiring. Concentrate on the brown wire at the firewall plug 16 gauge that runs to the external voltage regulator. This is the SI internal regulator conversion. The brown wire is run directly to the alternator to the no.1 terminal. The red wire from the old EVR is run to the no. 2 terminal. Upgrade the alternator output wire to a 10 or 8 gauge wire depending on how much output you need. Here is the conversion for the CS newer style alternator. You will have to add a 35 to 300 ohm resistor recommended at least 1 watt into the brown wire from the firewall plug. It will go to the L wire on the CS alternator. Use the same red wire from the old EVR to go to the sensor terminal S on the CS alternator and upgrade the red output wire to 8 gauge. Many of the later CS alternators do not need the red sensor wire and only use the brown exciter wire to L. I think 1994 and later.

I got tired of having a dead battery every two weeks just from sitting. The local alternator guy in town said there was nothing wrong with my alternator, but he replaced parts free of charge anyways. Unfortunately, I still had the same issue. Damn alternator was staying "live" even when the engine wasn't running. I went to a traditional 3-wire alternator per mad electrical instructions and never had another issue! |
