Re: 6.0/4l80e swap help
I have read several threads where people just had to move crossmember back 1 to 2 inches. I bought the motor adapter plates from street and performance to put engine in stock location, could this be the issue?

Re: 6.0/4l80e swap help
I put a 4l80e in my 82 step side. I cut the side that folds up on the cross member that was hitting the tank. Then I just slide it back drilled some hole in the frame and I was done.

Re: 6.0/4l80e swap help
You need a flexplate. Drive shaft. Some kinda controler. Dipstick shifter. I got my tranny for free and I still have over $1300 tied up in it.

Re: 6.0/4l80e swap help
I bought a 6.0/4L80e with everything needed besides drive shaft, I'll have to get it shortened. The yoke is also diff. from a turbo 350. I believe you can use the stock shifter, may have to modify but I haven't got that far yet.

Re: 6.0/4l80e swap help
Droach , I used the stock cross member in the stock location on my 82 . When I set the motor/trany in I bolted the trans up and fit the motor mounts to where it fell . You could do this easy with some slider motor mounts or make your own flat plates which is what I did . I also had to mod the pass side motor mount to get it fit proper .Also if you have not gotten any of your stuff yet holley is coming out with a complete system for 73-87 trucks . It should be out at the end of the month . I wish they had that set up when I was doing my swap . It takes the guess work out of it . There is a thread over on ls1tech in conversions on it .
Also there is a lsx section here in the engine/drivetrain at the top of the page that should help you out . Also I used the stock shifter on mine as well . Just cant get it pulled all the way down to first gear manually . I plan on addressing this at some point . Header selection is important to do this . When I put my ls2 in I put in a set of headers instead of stock manifolds . The headers pointed straight at the crossmember. I did not want to jockey over it so I wound up using this . http://www.summitracing.com/parts/trd-6559/overview . It installs between the frame rails and worked great for me . Allowed me to run exhaust straight back from the headers .I welded one side and drilled and bolted the other side for easy removal . This could be another option for you . Re: 6.0/4l80e swap help
Did you have enough space to the radiator for the stock fan with the engine moved forward that far?

There was plenty of room . I am running electric fans , but I don't think there would be any problem for a mechanical fan. From the back of the radiator to front of the little nub where the fan screws on in front of the water pump pulley is 8". Should be no problem. |

Re: 6.0/4l80e swap help
Only bit that i can add is that with the engine in the "stock location" (in other words, you unbolted the 350 from the trans, lifted the engine out, and then dropped in the LS and bolted it right back to the trans, without ever touching the trans. Make sense?) And with a stock mechanical fan, the fan needs spaced about 2" forward to be properly inserted into the fan shroud. So i think the engine could be as much as 3" moved forward with no ill effects from running a stock mechanical fan. Did that all make sense?

Re: 6.0/4l80e swap help
That makes sense. I was planning on putting my engine in the stock location, maybe even farther back, as I'd rather have weight farther back. Probably stock location so I can access the back of the engine easily.
I'm also planning on a 6.0/4L80E, really looking forward to it.

Re: 6.0/4l80e swap help
You really cant go back much more than stock. Maybe an inch at the most.
Here is how mine turned out. And how close it is to the fire wall.

Re: 6.0/4l80e swap help
Is that a stock radiator? What hose is that?

Re: 6.0/4l80e swap help
I just looked up the trans mount locations . The th350 is 20-3/8" from the bell housing. The 1998 and later 4l60e is 21-3/4" . This would move the engine forward 1-3/8" . This should not be a problem . It could be tweaked easy enough if needed .
I can answer the radiator hose question . It is the same as mine . Mine came from an 04 Silverado with my 5.3 . I think all the top hoses from the 00 trucks up to 07 classic were the same . Heres a picture of mine . Mine is a stock radiator but with electric fans . |

Re: 6.0/4l80e swap help
homemade87 thanks for the link I'll check that out. I cut the stock cross member off and it looks like I can drill holes and bolt it up. Cross member is about 6" further back. I bought my motor adapter plates from street and performance. Bolted driver side up, working on modifying passenger side so I can run stock a.c. compressor.

Re: 6.0/4l80e swap help
The stock ac compressor usually wont fit due to interference with the frame rail.
The Rad in my pics is the stock one. And i agree with everything homemade said.

Re: 6.0/4l80e swap help
So those are both old radiators with new engines? That's what I'd like to do.

No need to do anything special on the radiator . Stock one works just fine . Also I did use the 04 A/C compressor on the engine in the lower position . It does fit between the rail some . There is some special fitting you have to use to shoot the connections forward to clear the frame . |

Re: 6.0/4l80e swap help
While my truck was an AC truck originally, and still has the evaporator and condenser, I wasn't planning on installing AC as I hear it's hard to fit and it doesn't get too hot around here.

Re: 6.0/4l80e swap help
I sell these.... I developed it for my own 6.0L/4L80e, and it has been applied successfully to everything tried, so far, TH350-4L60e-4L80e, and we're working on a 6L90e now. Follow the link in my signature for more info.

Re: 6.0/4l80e swap help
Yes. My swap used a stock replacement radiator for my 90 suburban. Basically, whatever truck you are swapping into, use the radiator original to the truck.
