What's the right name for a "Longhorn" GMC?
I have a 133" WB GMC Sierra Grande Custom Camper.
Sierra Grande does not imply long wheel base. Custom Camper was an option available on the shorter bed too. So, neither says much, either alone or together. So besides calling it a GMC "Longhorn" in quotes at the risk of someone knowledgeable laughing at me, what the heck do you call these things? Or is there no actual name that identifies them? "Dude, is that a CE26034 riding on a 133 wheelbase?" somehow lacks punch. Thanks! Dave

Re: What's the right name for a "Longhorn" GMC?
Custom Camper is what I've always heard. I understand the nameplate also applies to the 127" wheelbase but I believe all 133" gmc's are custom campers. There was no official "longhorn" GMC name to my knowledge.

Re: What's the right name for a "Longhorn" GMC?
sounds to me like you were looking at a 3500 series longhorn with both package's serria grande trim , and a custom camper option, p.m ss tim or longhorn man, they can tell you way more , here is one of his post and I think it was reply three that will show you the exhact package as you looked at . it would be neat to see pics of that truck very loaded

Mine is a Super Custom, with camper wiring, but no Custom Camper designation on the spid or doors.

Re: What's the right name for a "Longhorn" GMC?
We have been down this road before.
Never beeen able to document a "name" other than a model number. While some "claim" they are all "Custom Camper"s I have found several that were not and those that were (that I could document) had the seperate RPO Z81 on the SPID. The model number alone supports the 133" wheelbase CE26034 where as the same 127" wheelbase version would be CE25934.

Re: What's the right name for a "Longhorn" GMC?
I had one I took apart. It was neither a Sierra Grande nor was it a Custom Camper. It did have the Custom emblems on the doors. I used lots of parts for the '70 Sierra Grande big block truck I used to own that was a Custom Camper.

Re: What's the right name for a "Longhorn" GMC?
I don't believe GMC gave them a name at all. If they had, we would know because models names are for the sake of marketing, not be be kept a secret. Look at Highlanders & Inflation Fighters, no emblems but an option on the SPID. Where on GMC 133" Widesides is Custom Camper listed. It also would have been a bad move to create such confusion by using the same name for two things that could be on the same truck.
Elmer: I just picked up a '69 GMC Custom Camper. Zeke: Cool! Does it have the Custom Camper option? Elmer: No. Well, yes. I mean no, it's not a 133" Wideside, yes it has the Custom Camper option. Zeke: Oh, so it's not a Custom Camper Custom Camper. And it's not a 133" Custom Camper at all. It's a regular old 127" Custom Camper. Why didn't you say so?

"Dude, is that a CE26034 riding on a 133 wheelbase?" somehow lacks punch.
Most people just point at the bed extension on mine and say "what's that?"

I've got a 133" wheelbase GMC that's not a Longhorn, and a Dodge that is. Talk about dazed and confused.

Quote:
From all of this I take it the consensus is that there's just no name for them. That's great, but I'm surprised GMC didn't do so just for marketing purposes. Maybe Custom Camper was what they were selling and whether you wanted it in 127 or 133, they didn't care. GMC really focused on the camper aspect, whereas Chevy seemed to be eager to sell the Longhorn as just a long pickup as well. That could just be my perception of the old marketing materials and has no basis in fact.

Re: What's the right name for a "Longhorn" GMC?
I just call mine a Longhorn anyway. It's just easier.
