GM 4 speed O/D to 5.3L
I've been agonizing over my transmission choice but now my incessant Craigslist searching has paid off. It yielded an 80's NP833 truck 4 speed O/D cheap. So long as the seller follows through I'll get it on Wednesday.
The plan is to mate this to a 5.3L for my '50 chevy. I want a manual trans but don't really want to deal with 1) high price 2) hydraulic clutch or 3) 1:1 final drive. This trans should solve all of these problems while being different. The gearing is close to 700R4 at: 3.09:1, 1.67:1, 1:1, 0.73:1 Now just to figure out how to properly mate it to the 5.3L...

The cranks are different on 5.3 auto and manual. You may need to get a 5.3 that was manual to make it work or get a flywheel adaptor.

Re: GM 4 speed O/D to 5.3L
Well after talking with Novak, it should be the same as any other Gen1 4 speed to LSx. Use the old bellhousing, 4.8L flywheel and clutch and a conversion pilot (.400 longer?) bushing from Novak. I'm not sure about the clutch linkage though.

Re: GM 4 speed O/D to 5.3L
Not sure if anybody is watching this thread, but surely someday somewhere somebody will want to put a GEN I manual transmission behind a GEN III engine. Well, after literally weeks of searching I found this, the holy grail. For about $80 and a trip to O'Reillys I'll be in business:

Re: GM 4 speed O/D to 5.3L
just happened to be readying an old CHP mag and found someone asking the same question they gave a part# for just your problem it's an ls crank spacer #12563532 this makes up the 0.004 inch on the crank the longer bolts are #12553332 this is a cheap way to do it if you don't want to buy the new flywheel. hope this helps

Re: GM 4 speed O/D to 5.3L
If i can't find a nv3500 to stick behind a 5.3, i'm looking to do the same. In my research, i found these articles from carcraft and hottod mags to be very helpful.
