Protrash64 mentioned it's all about the theme of your truck, I couldn't agree more.

I think that would look real good on a stepside but mounted vertically vs horizontally... not sure if the round part would look good on top or bottom.

I have the same thoughts as you, I already filled the stock tail lights in and decided to go with a flush mount 39 Ford tear drop tail light mounted as low as possible in the same line as the roll pan.
