nv 4500
Has anyone swapped an nv 4500 into a 72 4x4? I assume it would work fine, just curious about how close the shifter would be to the 4 speed hole, I know 4 speed is off to the driver's side and the 4500 would be more center. Mostly asking cause the overdrive would be nice, and who doesn't like shifting gears?

Re: nv 4500
No problem whatsoever for mine, slight modification for perfect placement on the tunnel but otherwise it works.

Re: nv 4500
There is a lot of information on doing this type of swap.
Looked into this first back in the late 90's for my 72 C/30 at the time. Advanced Adapters has a nice plate adapter to allow the Dodge version to bolt up to the Chevy stock bellhousing. http://www.google.com/custom?domains...D%3A1%3B&hl=en

Re: nv 4500
As far as I know both the SM465 and NV4500 shifters are centered side to side. I think the 4500 shifter is a bit farther back. No doubt the measurements can be found by searching the internet.
A late 4x4 NP205 uses a round pattern like a 4x4 NV4500 and an early 32 spline short NP205 input can make things almost bolt up. As I recall you have to shorten the trans output by about .25". Or you can use the long input and a spacer from AA. On pirate there are people selling oval to round adapters. ORD and others may have some as well. |

Re: nv 4500
Yeah I'll work on pictures when I get home. If you need a bellhouse to fit a Chevy v8 to a Chevy nv4500 early model transmission I have one blasted and clear coated with fork, splash guard etc

Re: nv 4500
I appreciate it but this is all just planning stages, I am in the process of putting a vortec 4.8 into an 86 monte, this will be my first ls swap, if I like how it goes I would not be opposed to putting a 6.0 in my 72, but was thinking about trans options, cause the power and fuel econ combo is my main goal. and I haven't found too many good solutions to trannys. but last night I was on craigslist and saw an add for a 4500, I had a cummins powered dodge that had the 4500 and had almost no problems out of it until 200k, seemed strong and I liked the ratios or the feel of them and loved that 5th was more or less overdrive and 1st was low, both good 4x4 points IMO. just not sure if I would see similar performance behind more RPMs

Re: nv 4500
5th in the 4500 is overdrive.
The 1st ratio was 6.x from 93-95 or so and 5.6 in 96 and up. Still low but not quire as low. |

Re: nv 4500
All I know is behind a Cummins with 3.73s unless it was really loaded, or you were power breaking it was useless, haha, thanks though
