Help with my dash holes

So, I bought this 68 short fleet a few months ago and the PO had bolted this piece of aluminum painted black over the radio and ash tray holes on the dash. Today I finally got a chance to take that piece off and see what's underneath. Ashtray hole looks fine, radio hole... Not so much.
My question is what options do I have fixing this without breaking the bank ? Should I just straighten/fix it as well as I can and stick a stereo in it ? Any input will be appreciated.

Re: Help with my dash holes

You can patch that in with a donor patch. Look up Teeitup on the parts board. I know he has that cut and ready to send out.

Re: Help with my dash holes

I think this is the truck I went to buy a couple of months ago from a young boy in Asheville who was going back to college. I passed on it, stopped in Greensboro on the way back home and bought an '82 from a lady moving back to Florida. Made some good money on it, just bought a '67 from Tennessee. Maybe I'll see you around soon, good luck.

Definitely not the worst I've seen but still bad. I think they used a jack hammer to fit in a big screen or something in mine. I wound up buying another complete dash and cutting/welding it back in.

The PO on my truck did the same...chopped everything up for an aftermarket radio and I really hated the ashtray as well so, I got out the 3 inch grinder and a cutoff wheel, cut out the cancer, made a template for a piece of 16 ga. and welded that in. No more holes, no radio hack job and no ashtray. Best of all, the 16 Ga was lying around so I didn't pay anyone for a patch panel either!

Re: Help with my dash holes

I see some cracking in the corners, along the sides of your cut radio plate. In would strongly recommend you stop drill each corner, crack to lessen the chance of the cracks growing. Smallest drill bit you can manage is best. Place a 2x4 behind the area while drilling to support the structure. Low pressure on the drill while drilling. Yes, it is some pretty thick metal however, when this metal cracks, it is usually sudden and grows quickly. Doing what you can now to prevent this from happening is best in the long run.

See attached for more info.
