Good or bad info??
I talked to someone today who advised me against going with a 700r4 behind a 383 for my truck (72 swb 4x4 ), he said it won't shift right without all the electronic stuff ( like on the newer engines. ) I see a lot of folks here have similar combos. what the Heck??

Re: Good or bad info??
That guy must have the 4L60E on his mind. you can put in a 700R4 and not need any hookups if you choose not to have the TCC[Torque Converter Clutch] hooked up. However, the 700R4 must have a TV cable[similar to a kickdown cable] hooked up to the carb and adjusted properly for the trans to live in that or any environment. Not just the torque of the 383 stroker will kill a maladjusted 700, so would the torque of a S10's 2.5 liter 4 cylinder[no disrespect to the S-guys] Now if you were to put in a 4L60E witch is the later version of the 700R4 that did go all electronic somewhere in the 94 model year range and it is controlled by the ECM and later by the ECU's of the trucks they came in without the computer and all the sensors needed to make it function in your truck lik the TPS and several others it never would come out of first gear. There are stane alone kits to make it work but the cheapest is in the 600 dollar range and the transmission is still several hundred higher than the 700R4. The Overdrive aspect and ratio is very close to the same ratio as the 4L60E so the 700 is the best bet. Jim

Re: Good or bad info??
Agreed. No electronics in the 700R4, typically speaking.

Re: Good or bad info??
The name changed for a short time to 4L60 without the "E" for marketing reasons once the 4L80E went into use. The new 4L60E came along shortly. The 700r4 is the simple and easy overdrive swap for older GM vehicles and that guy should hold his info back till he gets it right.

Re: Good or bad info??
Yes, the key to a long life on 700R4 is the TV cable and correct adjustment of it.

The 700R4 is the probably the most widely used OD transmission to go behind "non-electronic" vehicles and has been for over 20 years. Their only real shortcoming is that they really need a lot more money thrown at them, than a Turbo 400 would, if you want to put them behind a big block with tons of torque.
