51- LS2... so many questions
Hi Guys,
I have searched and searched but doesn't seem like too many people here have put an LS2 crate motor into a 47-59 Chevy 3100... Here are some questions to get me started.... What AC, Power steering, Alternator brackets have you used with the least amount of fabrication? How did you run your steering linkage through block hugger headers? Any tips on running a cable throttle and what brakes do you guys normally use? Thanks so much! Almost ready for paint! |

Good questions. Some of the answers are dependent on chassis configuration. Are you using a MII set up or staying with the stock steering column and straight axle? |

Also check out the LS Swap section. Ton of information there. There are options for just about anything you want to do, all depends on how much $$ you want to spend. The LS2 has the same dimentions as a LS1 or the commonly swapped 5.3.

Did your crate motor come with stock LS2 accessories on it? If not just get the stock corvette set up. Its the tightest to the block for clearance (not much from firewall to radiator) and it positions the alternator up high where its out of the way of the frame rail.

Putting a LM4 in my 49
ac bracket is the LS engine bracket for the Sanden compressor that Vintage Air sells Accessories options include the following - here's what I know Truck - furthest forward on the engine so room for electric fan is squeezed. Alternator is high on the engine. Good overall clearance with the ps pump and the Sanden compressor. Cheapest. Waterpump outlet will interfere with the throttle body of a car intake but can be reworked or a late model Camaro pump used. This is what Im using. F body - more clearance to the radiator. Alternator is low and ps on top. A little nicer looking and compatable withe the car intake Corvette - most clearance to the radiator but accessories are low and probably interfere with the frame rails if you want aftermarket Id look at the Kwik or Holley brackets for the LS For headers Ive tried the sheet metal Corvette, late model Camaro short and longtubes and a few others. Had some Trailblazer manifolds but they are damn ugly. Some have used the Sandersons for the LS with good results. Im using a Jag IFS so it is a little different and will likely end up fabbing a set of custom headers that will clear the steering shaft with only two ujoints. To answer some of the questions. Its the OEM frame but has the Mustang II front suspension. I have spoken to dirty dingo, I just need to figure out what bracket would work best I guess. We tried a CTS bracket and it doesn't work.

Chuckuss, I am making my own engine mount brackets and should have some pictures tomorrow night in my build thread. Also have pictures of the engine side of the bracket in the build thread now.
Since you are going MIi you can use Borgensen universal joints and double D shafting to get past the header for connecting the steering column to the steering gear. Chevrolet Performance Parts has accessory drive kits that should work except for the air conditioning. Check There, Jegs or Summit for the dimensions. Stock truck might work though I haven't noodled that one yet. The ac compressor wont fit in the stock location without modification to the frame rail beside the engine. So, I am looking at a Holley high mount for mine. Still have to research the dimensions on that myself. Hope that helps some. |

As many have mentioned the AC is the toughest. You either have to cut deep in the frame or the inner fender unless you want to spend some money for a compact drive unit. Numerous out there but they are all about $1500 and up but they work inside the frame with Mustang II . I went with Dirty Dingo.....I can't build them for what they sell for.

Ive got the LM7 out of the truck and the measuring I've done I think I am going with the holley brackets which includes the small power steering pump and mount the Alt and the AC up high on the sides. Just my .02

Advanced Design. PLEASE let me know when you figure your side out. Would love to see what you used an how to run them. I am a bit out of my element with this.

I used the Holley brackets for the look of them but had to trim out the fender wells so the Alt and AC would fit. I used Vintage Air
Make sure you have your manifolds on when your setting up your mounts. doing the mounts and then figuring the manifold is a big PIA. The truck I'm still working on is here http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=569491 its a 50 using a connect and cruise package, vintage ac, holly brackets. the radiator fan is a Mark 8. On a 47 we just di d I put the radiator on the out side of the support and trimmed the upper and lower valances to accommodate it. The AC condenser fit sin there nicely and the hood closes ok, it gives you about 3 more inches for a fan. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=625724&page=2 look about halfway down the page and you will see a picture of the radiator set forward of the support It uses a Mark 8 fan also |
