1972 GMC Sierra Grande

I've posted pics of the Sierra Grande I just bought on eBay. See my Member Gallery under "Lurayfarmer." Comments welcome. The truck should have "parchment trim" in the cab, and I don't think what it has now qualifies. But what specifically needs to be changed? I'd guess at least the seat cover and the door panels - advice will be appreciated.

Re: 1972 GMC Sierra Grande

Is there a way to post a link? If the door panels are painted over you may be able to blast it off w/o ruining the surface. Many parts vary in color whether it has tilt or not

Tim - I think if you copy a link into a reply, anyone can recopy it and paste it in the address line.

I'll check the door panels as you suggest. But I'm pretty sure the Sierra Grande panels had some "wood" sections. These panels are available. What would be great is if someone in the club owned an unrestored SG that has the "parchment trim" package.

Nice looking truck. If it's supposed to have Parchment trim that would include the door panels and sun visors. Can you post a photo of the spid on the inside of the glove box door? That would probably help answer a few questions.

Bill, I hope you don't mind me posting pics of your truck. I saw it on EBay when it was for sale and just love it. There wasn't clear spid pic in the ad and if you post one , we can tell you what seats your truck had originally. I am posting oils of the door panels and seat.

Re: 1972 GMC Sierra Grande

The PO probably switched to a black interior because Parchment ends up looking dirty and dingy after a while. If you plan on driving and using the truck it is something to consider.

Re: 1972 GMC Sierra Grande

Interesting point about the parchment trim - I can certainly see that happening with use. I drive all my collector vehicles and I plan to drive this one plenty. I would like s slightly dressier seat, perhaps the houndstooth fabric.

Odd note - the initial pick-up in Glendale by the shipper's hauler went awry because the seller (faced with a super-irritable truck driver) momentarily forgot that the truck won't start if the shift lever is too far over in Park. Wear on the neutral safety switch, most likely. The seller suddenly remembered the quirk and the truck started instantly - but the driver had already driven off in a huff and refused to come back. It's all straightened out now and the truck will be on its way tomorrow.

The incident reminded me of my own situation when I bought a '58 Buick two years ago and had it shipped from upstate NY to Virginia. When the driver from Horseless Carriage reached my farm (I was leading him), he launched into a furious tirade about being on a dead-end road and having to back up about 500 feet after the delivery. Total a--hole and I called the company about him. Shipping a vehicle is always an adventure.

Re: 1972 GMC Sierra Grande

I really like the houndstooth pattern - but we'll have to see what will work against the bronze/copper body color.

Re: 1972 GMC Sierra Grande

I had a Fremont '72 Sierra Grande in red orange & white with parchment, but had tilt (which changes some things). The door panels, headliner, seatbelts, and herringbone seat were parchment. The carpet was black as well as the a/c vents. The tilt meant black dash pad, column, and steering wheel. Not sure if the tilt is why the a/c vents were black and not body color. The instrument panel is supposed to be chrome on the outer rim and the glovebox door was black. I had a Cheyenne Super the same colors from Fremont and that had a body color glovebox door. GMC matched the glovebox door to interior color and the non-Sierra Grandes would have where your cluster is woodgrain painted interior color (with chrome rim). I'm pretty sure yours would have had a Sandalwood column, wheel, and dash pad and if so, the glovebox door too). we really need to see some original sierra grande '72s with parchment interiors and no tilt to be sure.

That's really something when a guy makes his living driving a truck and gets mad when he has to use some driving skill. If he used his brain he could have called and asked the situation before pulling in. I would never assume there would be enough room to turn a car carrier around. The dairy farm across the road has a long lane and the tanker backs all the way in everyday. That's his job

Re: 1972 GMC Sierra Grande

Great information, thanks!

As to the angry trucker ... I was stunned by his attitude. As as fan of the now cancelled show Ice Road Truckers, while the guy raged I kept trying to imagine Polar Bear Hugh Roland or Alex Debogorski whining about backing up a few hundred feet to the main road - which has about zero traffic in it.

Re: 1972 GMC Sierra Grande

Its like asking a cashier to ring you up and they pitch a fit. I knew a trim carpenter who refused to do crown moulding. Is that a trim carpenter? How about a farmer who gripes about having to cut crops every doggone year feed the animals every day? And now look, here comes that GD rain to mess things up!
