I have tried useing the cardboard to choke out the carb, it just stalls the engine. Any other way to check for a leak without a gauge?

Put the air cleaner back and make sure your using the air cleaners base gasket. then use some wd-40, spray a short shot of it on the carb around the linkages and ports, then the gasket areas, spray once and wait, did the rpm increase? spray again elsewhere and wait, did the idle increase? I normally like to use starting fluid but you need to be sure it dosn't get sucked thru the air cleaner.
