What Transmission?

This truck was passed down to my wife and after a year of it sitting in the garage I decided to start tackling some of the issues. Truck was "restored" to use in parades waaay back in the day, but looks like they used lots of tar and rivets to cover the rust holes and nothing was done to the underside.
.

Started with a disc brake conversion and as I read the instructions it said I need a tubular trans mount. I climbed under to take a look at the current one and noticed the rear transmission mount is missing and something is being held in place by bailing wire. What transmission would be installed on this truck? It has 3 on the tree and a 216 in it that runs, but hasn't been driven in over 20yrs, so I'll leave it for now.

Re: What Transmission?

Thats original, the bell housing has the rear mounts and the front is mounted on the very front of engine. That has the closed driveshaft or torque tube to the rear differential. The bailing wire is wrapped around the rear crossmember. That trans looks like a four speed not three on the colunm as I don't see the shift linkage on the side of the transmission.

Re: What Transmission?

You have an sm420 instead of the 3 speed peanut trans so you don't use the rear mount with an SM 420. The mount they are referring to is marked in red. It is used with the 3 speed peanut transmission

Re: What Transmission?

Thanks! That helps. There will be tons of clearance for the booster now. I realized I typed 3 on the tree and did not mean that, shifter is on the floor. Lots of grease and dirt to clean off to see anything in there...
