Ball joint put in and now SES light?

Well if it could happen yep it would happen to me. I had my guy come to my shop the other day and put in all four ball joints and an axle in my 05 Z71. He had some trouble pressing out and in the new one and Once or twice before I left him to go to the Doctor, I heard him hitting on the A-arm. Now after he got it all back together, as soon as I brought it out of the shop the SES light came on. It has never been on as long as I have been driving it since I built it back a couple months ago. But now it has PO449 and PO455. Those are gross evap leak and evap vent malfunction.Has anybody got a clue as to what to look for? Please help a brother out! Jim

Re: Ball joint put in and now SES light?

I doubt this is related to your ball joints and axle. First clear the codes, do several drive cycles and see if they come back. This could be simple as the gas cap left off, loose or bad seal.

With these issues recurring we generally would do this in my shop. 1) smoke test the evap/fuel system to find potential leaks. 2) Test the evap canister vent solenoid and evap canister purge solenoid function. They can be activated on a Tech 2 scan tool. They can also be tested for power, continuity, etc. if you are good with diagrams and a meter but it's much easier to watch them operate (or not) under the correct parameters with the Tech 2. GM's diagnostic procedures are more prescriptive, and I'm not a tech so I'm paraphrasing but this is the basics of it.

We replace a lot of the vent solenoids with an updated part that relocates the actual vent so it's less likely to get dirty. 99% of the time it will be either the gas cap off, evap vent solenoid or purge solenoid.

Re: Ball joint put in and now SES light?

Well I had put about 1500 or more miles on the truck since I built it from a wreck, never had a SES code until then I know it is weird happening that way but I know it happened at thew same time. I changed the cap after clearing the code the first time and it popped right back. I also checked the lines underhood and found nothing there to indicate I should have either of those two codes. Now the light isn't full time it is intermediate. I don't have the luxury of the Tech 2 scanner at my shop but that is on my tools to buy one day list.
If I had some one tell me that they did frontal work on their truck and now it has the gas vent code,I'd tell them to check the cap then the other had to be happenstance but the truck came out with the ses light on I wasn't there cause I had a DR visit but my dad said the truck fell from the jack, he just knew that our helper guy was dead. I can't make him understand about safety glasses when hammering or grinding or about jackstands. My shop my rules kinda of thing you know?
