Today's post test drive dumb question
After finally giving in and installing an in-bed filler cap, I finally took my old K10 for its first ride in more than 20 years. Made it down to the local parts store to pick up some heater hose. There is still much to do, but it made it there and back, and the engine doesn't smoke or make any weird noises. My only glitch during the test drive was my own fault; I forgot to cotter pin the clevis pins for the rod that connects the transfer case lever in the cab to the lever on the transfer case. That lead me to a question. I think the truck is in 4 wheel drive, possibly 4 wheel low. The front hubs are unlocked, but I cannot turn the front drive shaft with the transmission in neutral. The gearing also seemed to be rather low; I wasn't comfortable driving over an indicated 40 MPH (I haven't checked for speedometer error yet). Once connected, what is the quadrant for the transfer case shifter? The pattern is long gone from the knob, there is no sticker in the cab and the owners manual (yes I have one of those) isn't clear. Before the clevis pin fell out, I had the lever all the way forward, which seems correct to me. |

Sorry I can't answer your specific question, but I can't imagine being in 4-low and going 4-mph. But I'm coming from a jeep with a crawler gearbox where it tops out at like 9mph in low.

Most transfer cases are: up for 2wd down one notch is nutral down one more 4wd hi, over and down 4lo

You are absolutely in 4 wheel as you would NOT be able to turn the front shaft even with the hubs unlocked and trans in neutral UNLESS the rear wheels were off the ground or there was no rear shaft

You could also be in low range (4L) in the transfer with the trans in HIGH gear you MIGHT get 40 MPH pinned to the floor

Here's mine from my 65 K20. My power train setup is 292 inline 6. Sm420 trans. Rockwell t221 transfer case with factory axles. Eaton ho72 rear dana 44 closed knuckle fronT.. I had 4:11s but thos were in my twd. But my top speed was 55 60 hope this helps man

Good luck. My tcase shifter has to be ALLLL the way forward to be in 2 hi. Sometimes it'll get hung up in 4 high. Maybe that help. Good luck! And sweet truck man!

If you have the original shifter and transfer case, all the way forward is 2 high.

It was in 4 wheel high. I reinstalled the connecting rod, pushed on the lever and it clicked forward. Completely transformed the drive. All the front stuff rotating gave the truck a vibration that felt like I was revving more than I was (no tach yet). The 400 with the solid cam the PO installed gives the truck some grunt. Now we can start using it as a truck.
