In discussing Chevy truck rear axles, ie: 10 bolt, 12 bolt, 14 bolt, etc. what does all that mean?

Simply put, to help identify which type of axle you have, count the number of bolts holding the rear diff cover on. There are 10, 12, and 14 bolt axles, with varying models in each category. In other words, a 10 bolt axle has 10 bolts holding the differential cover on, while the 12 bolt has 12 bolts holding the diff cover on, etc. Read the above links for more specific info.

the 10 and 12 bolt actually refer to the number of bolts that hold the ring gear to the carrier. It is a nice coincidence thet the inspection cover is held on with the same number of bolts. Helps to identify them easier.

Interesting - - I never knew that. I just always thought it refered to the cover only.
