Leaking Floating Hub
Are the bearings in a full float lubricated with grease or gear oil? I have a leak on the inner bearing seal. Gear oil is going from the tube to the hub and leaking into the drums. I removed the axle and found the bearings packed with grease. I don't see a seal between the tube and hub. I'm I missing something?

The bearings are lubed by gear oil from the differential. It's common to pack the wheel bearings with grease before re-assembly as an added precaution and that's probably why you are seeing grease there now. Do you know what type of rear diff it is? Might be able to find a pic showing just where the seals are located.

Thanks for the quick reply, its a Dana 60. Looks like I have to remove the big nut and pull the hub off to change the seal? I have never worked on this type of rearend. I just topped off the gear oil last week and changed the pinion seal. I guess it finally made its way out. Thanks |

If you remove the hub, there had better be a seal on the back of it. The grease should not be all that thick, as mentioned it is just a pre-lube type of deal until the oil can travel down the tubes and the diff is topped off. There are actually 2 nuts under the washers

I've had my Eaton apart a couple times but never a Dana. Just take pics and make notes as you go.... If I run across anything that might help, I'll post to this thread.

The seal is on the back side of the hub, probably can't see it till its tore down. It's pretty simple once you get it apart.

Its easy enough and the front loading drums make it a bit easier.
Here is a drawing from a GMC manual. Strongly suggest you have a copy of the service manual for the torque numbers. The 72 is probably your best bet as serveral earlier years do not have clear specs for the Dana 60. Remember its good practice on full floaters to jack the rear one wheel at a time after refilling the gear oil. This fills the low side hub. Then top off the axle. RTFM ...
