How is trim fastened on a 79 Bed
Hi All,
I have a plain 79 k20 custom deluxe. I have located a good used bed (maybe). Unfortunately the bed I located is off a higher trim level sierra, so the used part has the factory trim going around the bed to separate the blue and white color sections. How did the factory attach that trim? How much body labor is required to take it off and cover it |

It pretty basic. Are you pulling all of the trim off? The upper long pieces have 2 screw holes. each of the lower pieces has 2 screw holes. There is a total of 6 holes per side

I can't see a good reason not to by it as long as it has the same fuel tank configuration your truck has. It isn't a ton of holes to fill and I would guess it is pretty hard to find a nice bed in your area.

Re: How is trim fastened on a 79 Bed
Even finding this bed meant traveling to the Carolinas. The 79 has a a fuel door on the Right. It was a two year only feature. Is is possible to buy an earlier bed, say a 75 and swap the right hand bedside without much effort to a 79 side?

Bedsides are easy to swap. Just a lot of bolts and a couple tack welds were the rear stake pocket meets the floor. Which side is you filler neck on now?

Its on the right, as is the tank. I am trying to keep the truck original, and not have to swap the tank side. How common is the factory tank guard?

Re: How is trim fastened on a 79 Bed
Well at least it is on the same side. I had wanted to keep my 77 original too but wanted locking gas caps. There weren't any available that didn't look out of place so I went with a gas door bed

I wish I lived in Arizona. Here in New England 10 year old cars are basically on their way to becoming total rot boxes. I have thought of bring a truck back here from your part of the world, taking the bed and selling the rest. You know how that stuff turns out....
The 800 bucks worth of parts becomes 650... |

It is always better to get a parts truck if you can. I don't envy you guys in the rust belt! It would be really hard for me to make a living out there. It is such a challenge getting rusted bolts loose off vehicle from your area.
