Rear disc brake kit confusion

I did a search and boy am I confused. I have a 68 1/2 ton with a 5 lug rear. Is there any kit out there for rear disc brakes that you don't have to pull the axles? Maybe just cut the backing plate off. Could someone list all the parts I'll need to complete this swap. Thank you, Larry

You don't have to remove your axles to install the CPP kit.

pulling the axles is easy but not needed in a lot of cases. It would be a good time to pull and replace the seals also.

Re: Rear disc brake kit confusion

You likely only need to pull the axles on C-clip rear ends. Which could be the case on a half ton, but the HD ones are all floating axles.

There may be ways to install that kit, as mentioned above, without pulling them. But the Cadillac rotor system thats in a lot of kits does require it.

Either way the drum backing plate has to come off, right? Does it get cut off?

To change from drum to disc brakes you need to remove the backing plate for the drum brake setup. It will not fit over the axle flange. It's a bit easier to just remove the axles but you might be able to cut the backing plate off with a 3 in grinder and a cut-off wheel. It's a forging, though, so expect a tough job. Once that is done, the CPP disc kit bolts tight on. No need to remove the axles to get it assembled correctly once the backing plate has been removed..

Thumbs up Re: Rear disc brake kit confusion

I don't know how anyone can put the CPP kit on a rear truck axle without removing the axles unless they started fresh with no drums. I had to remove mine and put new seals on it while I had it out. I did the bearing a few years ago and seals. The backing plate has to come off of the rear end to mount the disc brake bracket. It will not slide over the flange.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.
