what if any differences are there between a 62 and a 64 grille support besides the mounting holes for the grille.can i use the 62 support with a 64 grill if i drill two new mounting holes?

The 1962 has a wider frame than 1963 and up. Thus, the notches at the bottom of the grille support will not be in the correct place. Here's my 1965 grille support so you know what notches I'm referring to.

Re: grille support

you mean the notches for the frame? the po put a 62 support and grille on and it looks like he modified those notches. i have an origional 64 grille but i cant afford a grille support right now,so i guess my question is can i make it work without it looking funky?

Yes, the frame notches will be different. If you move the notches or just widen them then you should be OK. Bumper should hide most of the carnage.

Why not just use the 62 support for now? I was thinking you wanted to put a 62 support on a 64 frame but it sounds like the PO already did that. The bumper should hide stuff for now until you have funds to buy a 64 support. I'd give you the one in my back yard if you were closer. LOL!
When I first read your post I thought you were gonna buy a 62 grille support and try to fit it on a 64 frame.

Re: grille support

The distance between the frame rails should be the same in the front. It is not until you get under the cab do they start to flair out. You should be fine with that grill support unless you are worried about the width of the rails themselves. That I do not know about. One difference you might run into is if you are trying to use a 1 ton or bigger truck's grille support I think the hole goes higher up than on the half ton. You can see the holes on a 1 ton and not on a half ton the bumper covers them up.

If the notches are indeed the same for 62 and 63-66 then I stand corrected. I was helping a 1962 owner in town and his grille support was cut up so it would fit over the front frame rails. He asked why and we both came to the same conclusion that the frame width was different. Funny how different circumstances can get a person to conclude something that "really ain't so".
Sorry for the confusion.

good thread that talked about the differences in the grill supports.

I installed a 61 support on my 63 with no issues. Did have to drill the 2 extra holes to except the 63 grill. This is also one of the supports that had 6 factory holes drilled in it. The support was off a 61 st. Louis apache 10 (picture attached).

Thanks, the radiator is a Champion. The grill is a one year only 63 option in aluminum. They came in steel also.

Took me a few years to find this one. Have managed to piece one together for the fleetside also. I removed the anodization which had faded badly and polished it out.
