Over heating issues.

My thermostat housing had been leaking a little bit so the other day I decided to fix that, now prior to this I have not had any over heating issues whatsoever. I changed the gasket and that was it, well it stopped leaking but now it overheats in about 5 minutes if I'm driving it and ten if its just idling. I put in a new thermostat and another new gasket and it still is doing the same thing. I haven't changed anything else so should I get another thermostat and try it or is there something else that I should be checking? Any help would be appreciated.

What temp thermostat? Should be 160 to 180.
Did you drain the coolant when you did the thermostat?
Is the spring on the stat setting in the intake or the housing?? (Stat in backwards? Just a thought.)

What exactly does it do that leads you to think it is overheating// is that a c40 year old gauge setup or are you taking an accurate measurement of the temp

Might not be the thermostat. Could be a 40 year old crud filled radiator too.

If it's only puking coolant out of the overflow hose, and not actually getting "hot" via a temp gauge... you've filled up the radiator too full. Rigs with radiators without an over flow tank and just a hose that directs coolant to the ground should be filled until the radiator is about 2" to 3" from the top.

Every time you refill it to the top, it will blow coolant.

Thanks for all the replys and the help guys. It is the correct thermostat, I just had air in the lines and didn't take the time to bleed them out. Sorry for the rookie mistake. Thanks again for the help and it just goes to show you that if you ever need any help someone is always here to help you.

Good job, way to stay with it. Some times we just have to go back to basics and start over.
