A buddy had the Smyth Automotive paint store in Cincinnati mix a color in SEM dye. He needed to color match some replacement interior parts, on his project '88 Supra, to the originals. They were a really dark red and the rattle cans just didn't match well enough. He sprayed it through a regular paint gun.

You should be able to do the same at any large automotive paint store.
I brought in my old dash and found a spot that was mot faded....had the paint shop color match with vinyl paint. Cleaning the pad beforehand is the most critical! It must be super clean to stick properly.

Make sure if using the sem to prep very well. There are 4 different sem products including the paint you need to use to make it perfect and last. It worked very well for my door panels.

I ordered the SEM Shadow Blue last night.
I knew there was some other SEM things I needed like cleaner and prep, but I didn't know exactly what they were called, so I only ordered the paint/dye.
.
Anybody want to post what all we need?
.
N2TRUX posted a 'how to' here, but I might have missed if he posted each product he used:

Re: SEM interior paint/dye

Post from another forum;
Quote:
Clean the
part with Dawn and warm water
and dry well, wipe with a good
grease and wax remover with a
clean lint-free cloth, spray and
wipe with the SEM vinyl and
plastic prep spray, spray liberally
with adhesion promoter and then
apply one LIGHT coat of SEM paint
while the adhesion promoter is still
wet. Wait fifteen minutes between
coats and apply up to four coats.
You can also wipe the part with a
tack cloth to remove any lint or
particles between steps of the prep
phase stated above. Follow these
steps and you'll have great results.
Also, DO NOT touch the part with
your bare fingers during any of the
prep phases or you're asking for
poor results and adhesion
problems. Good luck!
And;
Quote:
The SEM part number for the Sand
Free Adhesion Promoter is 38363. The
SEM part number for the plastic and
vinyl prep spray is 38353. I use Prep-
All Grease and Wax Remover part
number GSW362 as well.

Re: SEM interior paint/dye

I bought one can of shadow blue so I could see it in person. I really like the color.
I didn't want it to be as bright a blue as I saw in some pics I saw of it online.
I did a test piece on some black vinyl.
It is interesting how it sure looks different with pictures taken with my flash on and off.
I still want to see it in daylight to be totally sold.
These are with Flash Off:

And these are with Flash On;

To properly prep the sem you need
- SM scuff and clean and gray scuff pads
- SEM plastic prep
- SEM plastic adhesion promoter
- SEM paint/dye
You need to use it in that order as well. Each product has directions for proper use as well. You DO NOT use wax and grease remover you need to use the SEM scuff and clean with a gray scuff pad.

Re: SEM interior paint/dye

Thanks, dfrank.
My middle buddy seat is original vinyl from a 67 truck, so for it I'll be doing a thorough step by step clean and prep.
.
However, my two other seats are new black vinyl like in my pics that I want to make shadow blue. I figured since it's brand new vinyl that I'd just use the vinyl prep and then shadow blue.
Do you see any issue with that plan?

Re: SEM interior paint/dye

I've read a couple places to use windex for new vinyl. There's a dash replacement company that suggests wiping the new dash down with windex before spraying SEM.

Re: SEM interior paint/dye

I've used SEM several times, love the product. I just finished redoing the interior in my 91 crew and got rid of the dingy white crap and went with all new blue! The Shadow Blue goes great with with the new ACC full carpet, door carpet kit and new headliner. Love it!

Shadow Blue still looks lighter in pics outside than what it looks like in person.
Love the color.
Came out great.

Re: SEM interior paint/dye

Bump.

Having the same problem. I can't find a matching paint anywhere for the interior of my 81 Silverado (blue).

I went to the hardware store and also to the local KC paint and looked at their PPG books.

I have to paint the metal molding pieces that hold the headliner up. Here:

I really want to see someone do a full interior in plastidip! It seems like the finish would be about right and should flake off.
