protect o plate?

Heard people talk about it, but don't know what it is. Looked at older threads and didn't find much.

The Protect-O-Plate was furnished with the vehicle and was a metal plate imprinted at the assembly plant. The plate contained information on various standard or optional equipment. You may determine from the imprinted information on the plate the type of engine, transmission, rear axle, exterior color, the month the vehicle was produced, and other basic vehicle information.
Note: This plate was included with the warranty book and was not attached to the car.

When you went to the dealer for warrnaty work, they would use the protecto plate to confirm you are the original owner (that info is on there too) and they would slide it through a credit card type machine. (The old style)

My friend Bob still has the one from his 67. It's got about 34,000 original miles, and ALL the paperwork, including title, and all the registrations since new, and at least one build sheet. I only wish I had half the documentation for my truck!
