Door won't lock from outside

I have a recurring problem with my driver door lock where it will not lock from the outside. I have paid a locksmith to come fix it three times and a month or two later the problem comes back. Anyone have an idea of what is causing this?

Have you lubed the door latch and lock mechanism? Roll the window down and spray some good penetrating oil (not WD-40) on the back of the lock and on the latch. You can see the latch and back of the lock inside the door with the window down if you use a good light.

Do you live on a rock/gravel road?

I don't know if the locksmith did that or not. Last time he replaced the entire lock, and he might have just worked on that. It unlocks easily when it works, then one day out of nowhere it just won't turn to lock like the key is wrong.

Frustrating - I keep having to lock it from inside and climb through the passenger side to lock up my truck.

I had a similar issue and I did what LockDoc is suggesting. I used aero kroil. That stuff works great

Do you have more than one key? If so does it do the same thing with all of the keys?

I've always used the same key. I'll just call the locksmith that worked on it. He's a customer of mine and a nice guy. I'm sure he will help me figure it out, and I'll suggest we look at the latch mechanism.

It was worth asking on here in case someone else had the same trouble and discovered the cause. Thanks for the help!

Re: Door won't lock from outside

the next time it wont lock, open the door and try locking it with the door open. its a common problem on this site. the door has too much pressure on the lock mechanism...
