Rust on the top of bed
I just removed my tool box and noticed a few rusty places on top the bed just behind the rear glass. The holes are almost in the top where the rolled part is of the bed.Both ends are open but cannot figure why that is the only place too have rust.Seems it would rust around the bottom.Thinking of how to repair it Any ideas . I will post pics later.

Here are several pics. Able too blow out some rust through the small rust holes which came out the ends. Just how too keep it from getting any worse .

I have spent a lot of time on my bed the last couple of weeks and have learned a few lessons. I have a lot of money in the body work when I could of just replaced the panel. The front panel is cheap and its easier to just replace than try and fix. Unless you are trying to stay all original. On the cheap you could grind it off and weld in patch pieces but again, cheaper to replace. Just my two cents though.

I agree with the replacement front panel,
you can sand this one down and put a rust converter on and then try to patch and fill the holes.... but I would just a get a new panel and bolt it on put a good sealer/paint on it

Can that from panel be removed without sliding the whole bed back. Looks like about 17 bolts holding it on.
I have had the truck since 1980. I may just remove it and see what I can do but appreciate the info. |

My 70 had the same problem . . . the only way to fix it so it WON'T come back, is to replace it !!! Mine had a cap on it when I bought it . . . I think that was the reason it rusted right there. . . . . |

If you don't want to replace with a repo panel, find an original used one and use it. Either way repo or used original you will need to paint it.

I think I will go ahead and remove it .From what I have read that can be done without the bed being removed. Looks like about 17 bolts and maybe have too remove some floor bolts to spread the sides a little to get it out.

I tried 2 aftermarket panels from offshore manufacturers which did not fit properly. I then ordered one from Mar-K which fit perfectly. I have a wood floor. Not sure what you have. Either way, I'd trust their quality.

Those panels rust from the inside out, there's not coating inside of them, only bare metal.
