Re: My 72 gmc build

Picked up a pair of toolboxes from a friend the other day for $120! They're made from 1/8th inch tread plate and weigh 40lbs a piece

Re: My 72 gmc build

Thi thing is definitely a never ending project. Here in a little bit the transmission and t-case is going to be out so I can replace my clutch. Pretty sure it's just my throw out bearing, but after all this work I may as well do it all!

Re: My 72 gmc build

I now have a new clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing and return spring. The old return spring broke/disappeared and caused the throw out beating to ride on the pressure plate the entire time, thus causing the source of the grinding

Re: My 72 gmc build

I am officially done shopping at LMC! When I bought all my front end parts, not only did they sell me the wrong axle shaft u-joints, but they also gave me the wrong lower ball joints! The worst part about it is I didn't realize the ball joints were wrong until today when I went to adjust my clutch linkage

Re: My 72 gmc build

As it turned out, I did have the right ball joints. The way they were made caused it to look like they were sitting up too high in the knuckle. The plastic grease boot made it look like the metal lip that sits in the knuckle was way above where it needed to be. I guess this is why you don't check stuff when deprived of sleep

Re: My 72 gmc build

When I started this project, my goal was to have a brand new truck without paying the price of one. I guess that's not going to happen

The new clutch works great; the old girl shifts like a dream not. But, when I took it in to have the front end aligned I found out I needed a new steering box. Go figure...

Had this exact thing happen on my 72 K2500. Have you found the cause yet?

I'm pretty sure my switch is just a little worn, because I jiggled it a little and they worked again. Go figure

Re: My 72 gmc build

Today I'm getting the old girl back from the steering ms brake shop after having an alignment and rear brake job done. The back axle is apparently a crossbreed SOB. They had to pull numbers off the old break shoes to get them, the wheel cylinders were for a 3/4 ton FORD and the hardware was all GM!!! I've never heard of something this crazy!!!

Thanks! All I have left to do is paint those boxes and finish my interior, then it'll be ready to take me back and forth to college

You will be the man driving that to school, it sure is a head turner.

Need the wheels painted too, that would really set it off!

Re: My 72 gmc build

Hey all, I know it's been awhile. I've been driving the old girl every day for a couple months now and am happy to say things are great. Two weeks ago I took it 2 1/2 hours to college and the only complaint I have is it is LOUD at 80 mph; so loud you consider wearing ear plugs. The tires I have howl like old bias plies that you used to be able to buy at feed stores. Other than that I don't have any complaints
I am wishing now that I had installed 3.73 gears instead of the original 4:10s. Even with the
ranger it still winds up pretty high on the interstate. The next time I buy tires I'm going to a 33x9.50 instead of my 31x10.50s I have now. I did the math and it will be pretty close to a 3.73 rear end. Plus, with a narrower size, it may help increase MPGs a little

Re: My 72 gmc build

Here's from when I had it hooked to the stock trailer so I could haul my 4-H steers and show gear to the fair
