Outer door panel hole size

Does anyone know if 11/32 is the correct hole to drill for the outer door panel for the sport mirrors? Seems kind of large, but that's what I see on the factory picture that's been posted.

I don't have my doors handy right now but I did find this thread where a guy referenced using the 11/32" bit. I remember the holes being larger than I would have thought them to be. But looking around the forum that seems to be the correct GM info.

Thank's, the P/O welded up the original holes so I needed to drill them out again to install the sport mirrors back on, I guess the backing plate is all that is needed to secure the mirrors not the door skin.

Yes the backing plate is pretty important for distributing the weight. I've seen them installed without the backing plate but almost all of them resulted in cracks in the door skins over a period of time.

Im going to use liquid steel to secure the backing plate to the inner door skin, just wondering how long the screws will hold up, I noticed there is only a couple of threads on the backing plate in each hole, I was thinking of drilling those out and using chrome allen head bolts and nuts?

That's an option for sure.

Mine aren't perfect and I haven't gotten far enough along with the project to figure out what I'll have to do with mine. If your original screws are in good shape, I would try using them and maybe welding a nut, so you have new threads, onto the backside of the backing plate.
