Tips for an LS motor search..?!

So i'm contemplating looking for a donar LS to rebuild. What are the best years and sizes for the LS motor? What and where do I need to look for one? This is for my 77 K10 and I wanna keep it mild (factory LS specs). Any tips are welcomed and appreciated!!

Re: Tips for an LS motor search..?!

Any good 5.3 or 6.0 ls will work fine..hard to get one before they get gone but craigs list has a few..I know most of my buddies are going thru lkq. Most won't need rebuilding..but I've been told to stay away from the steel head motors..the earlier years 02-03-04-05 are easiest to find. If its dbw you may want to change to dbc..depends on what you get but always get the ecm, maf and accessories with the engine..and if you feel froggy get the wiring harness and if you want dbw get the gas pedal as well

Check carpart.com

One of the venders here, Pacific Fab, does turn key set ups for a really fair price.

carpart.com is a real good site. I found mine on "toys for big boys" on FB. However it turned out to be for sale from a close friend of a few of my close friends.

Just keep in mind you should change your trans to something newer like a 4l60e,And doing that you will need a adapter kit to run a older t case. The newer t cases are the wrong side drop.

Buy a complete vehicle that way you know everything should match up and that way you can also be sure that you have everything you need

Re: Tips for an LS motor search..?!

If you have the time and space, buying a complete vehicle is a good idea. That way you know everything works together. If you part out what you don't need, most of the time you will make extra money on it to put into you own build. Even if you get a motor with iron heads, you can find newer aluminum 317(and others) heads for dirt cheap.

Re: Tips for an LS motor search..?!

I bought a wrecked/rotted 2k Silverado for $800, truck was running when I got it, stripped the truck down and sold off all the parts, ended up with a free 5.3L and all the extra parts to do the swap. I used as much as possible from the donor, I even cut up the mandrel bent y-pipe to make the adapter sections to hook to my existing exhaust.
