Where to Locate PS Gear Box for 64' K10
Adding power steering to 1964 K10, using CaptainFab adapter plate. Using a Corp. 10 bolt out of a 1983 K10, along with steering linkage and gear box. Working on determining where to locate the gear box with Captainfabs adapter attached on the frame. Below are some photos where I have it located as a starting point. The gear box/pitman arm is located center ( wheels straight), the pitman arm is pretty much straight out from the frame. The drag link has a slight angle to it. The photo showing reference distance 12.75" could be shortened by about 3/4" by adjusting ( shorting) drag link.
If somebody has already done this to a 64 to 66 K10, would appreciate any photos, measurements on where you placed yours. thanks, Les |

You might consider looking at converting the shaft to a collapsible one to be a bit more modern.

Have you positioned the pitman arm by turning the steering box full lock left to full lock right and then half way between? If so then I would call that location good as long as the steering box is in line with the steering column shaft. In the pics it looks like the front of the steering box could come up just a little.

Just measured mine and its 12 - 3/4" using the point you used. Id say you're in the ballpark. Like CF said ... lock to lock then turn to center.

Re: Where to Locate PS Gear Box for 64' K10
Franken, CaptainFab, and 63GenIII,
Thanks for all the help, 1). I have changed my plans, and will add a "Borgeson steering column set-up", for safety, and better steering. 2). Did place the pitman arm in the center of it travel left to right, and that is what is shown in the photos. 3). Can raise the front up a little, especially with the new steering set-up. Steering column is in line with gear box shaft, however, the steering column is more to outside of truck and not centered in firewall hole. This another reason why will go to Borgeson steering shaft set-up in engine compartment. Then will be able to center column in factory location. 4). 63GenIII, thanks especially for the measurement, how does yours drive with new set-up, any bump steer or other bad habits. I am thinking not too much bump steer as the front suspension seems really stiff! Also have you measured your gear box lock to lock, the 83' I am using is 3 1/3 turns, seems like it will be pretty quick. I will do details on progress with photos in build. Thanks, Les Last edited by aotte1; 09-05-2015 at 12:58 PM. |

Re: Where to Locate PS Gear Box for 64' K10
No real bump steer issues that I've noticed. I just change my front springs to 52" so the front is pretty soft now. If I were to have bump steer, I think I would have noticed it after the swap. Good luck. Post lots of pics!

Re: Where to Locate PS Gear Box for 64' K10
ck out my build--it's a closed knuckle dana44 but it still is the same set-up. you should be able to go lock to lock with adj your drag-link. capt's mounting plate close to the front bumper bracket so steering box doesn't make contact. many have converted to late axles and will chime in---
