radiator upgrade

hi i am running a stock radiator in my 64 c10 and it runs a bit hot so i am wondering what is the best up grade? is there anything that will go straight in with not to much hassle

A good aluminum 2 core will cool better. Champion has alot of nice ones available.

I would want to know why its overheating! Timing, carb adjustment, clogged radiator fins, bad water pump, thermostat etc??? If it is the radiator then is it leaking, clogged fins???

What engine is in your truck? Does it have the small I6 radiator or the larger V8/292 radiator? Do you have a fan shroud?

it has a 383 stroker in it,and it has an electric fan that cuts in at around 190 f

Check out my radiator swap. Im running a 160* stat and it never moves from that temp not matter what im hauling or how fast im going.

I just took my original radiator to a reputable repair shop and it was close to 400 bucks for the core/rebuild w/ powerglide. After research looks like Champion is the top dog. Good luck!

I just installed a Champion 3-core in my '65 K10. It dropped right in with no drama.



The shroud was fabricated by the PO, and while it doesn't cover everything, I wasn't having overheating problems before (I sprung a small leak, and since this isn't a restoration, a chose a new rad over having the old one fixed. Look for the old in the Classified soon)

hey man im in England, i have been in touch champion radiators and they have said a 2 row is what i will need so think im gonna go for that

A 2 core radiator with 1 or 1.25" tubes will cool as good or better than a 3 or 4 core with 0.5" tubes, for example. It makes since mathematically.

Champion 2 core uses .75" tubes and their 3 and 4 core's use .63" tubes. Champion also sells American Eagle radiators (the one you bought from ebay), which their 2 and 3 row/core radiators use 1" tubes.

Griffin uses big 1.25" tubes in many of their radiators and so does my Entropy. This is why sometimes a 2 row radiator can be better than a 3 or 4 row with smaller tubes.

IMO, the 2 row radiator you bought with 1" tubes is a better choice than the Champion 2 row with .75" tubes.

Your numbers sound familiar on the .75" tubes for Champions 2 core. I confused my numbers because I was comparing the Patriot 2 row to Champions 3 row. Thats where I got 1" vs 5/8".

How do you think the Patriot 2 row would compare to the Champion 3 row? I was under the impression that they would be very close.

Do you have a link to the Patriot radiator? I never heard of them. Google just comes up with radiators for the patriot jeep.

If it has 1" tubes and has quality core and tanks, then it should be comparable to the Champion 3 row.

I'm the worlds worst about researching things to death. I spoke with the guy that had the ebay listing and saw his return policy and feedback and decided to order from him, but not before I spent hours reading about radiators.....

Its an AE284 - AE stands for American Eagle
Champion's standard 2 row for our trucks is an EC284 - EC for Economy

3 rows wide x .63� tubes x 2 (cuz rad tubes have 2 sides�top and bottom) x 42 rows tall x 23� wide core = 3651.5 square inches of cooling surface area.

2 rows x 1� tubes x 2 x 42 rows x 23� core = 3864 square inches of cooling surface area.

I agree with your math you found there.

I did see that you bought AE from ebay before, but the patriot name you put out above through me off.

Also, you can see the AE radiators on the champion website for some details too. I think you went the better route with the AE radiator for sure. Always good to research to death.

Providing the core dimensions are the same, the AE should cool better with the 1" tubes.
