Throttle body top mounted ?

Hy together..

i would like to get a more traditional look for my ls1 setup :-)

On the net i saw some setups which have the throttle mounted on the top of the engine...almost like a carburator.

Finally i want to install 2 throttles (or 3 smaller throttles) on the top.

I would use and adapt an intake like this one =

http://www.ebay.com/itm/262063143749...749%26_rdc%3D1

The plan is to close the original opening on the side and weld in 2 or 3 mounting plates for the throttle on the top of the intake manifold.

Furthermore i would like to use all the sensors, but i have no clue how to handle the mass air sensor .....even more if installed 2 or 3 throttles..
Any ideas ??

What do u think about this plan ??

Thanks a lot
Achim

Re: Throttle body top mounted ?

Why go thru all that work if you want it to look like a traditional small block?

Have you seen these? https://www.holley.com/products/ls_p.../parts/300-121 Its for use with dual throttle bodies and will give you the traditional look.

Re: Throttle body top mounted ?

u r right.....after checking some websites i also found this intake from Holley.

So far looks as a pretty good solution...

Finally i want to achieve this kind if look

http://www.alsblowers.com/streetinduction.html

So i still have to check which throttle body to use either ITB (maybe twinbodies) or a 4500 holley TB ??

Re: Throttle body top mounted ?

that kit from ALS is fake ITB's....which I just can't co-sign the idea of.

If you want real ITB's that use a drive-by-wire stock throttle system, the people to check out are Jenvey.

http://www.jenvey.co.uk/

They do some of the most insane intake/carb/injection products out there.

Re: Throttle body top mounted ?

i know with a fake ITB it is not the way to go ....it was just an example i would like to go with the horns.. i love that look when they are not so straight.

I heard and read a lot of the jenveys but unfortunately they are way out of my budget..

My current favourit is to use the edelbrock intake with some ITBīs of V8 BMW.

Here in Germany a lot of V8 engines have ITB, partly u can get them for a reasonable price here...

Re: Throttle body top mounted ?

GEnerally it is exactly what i am looking for , but i want to install horns to get that kind of classic look .....

So i cannot copy that idea of installing the MAF inside the air filter, but it is a very clever solution !!

Thanks for the link !!!

Re: Throttle body top mounted ?

Achiim, if you have the ECM tuned for Speed Density, you can ditch the MAF all together and run whatever type of intake you want.

+1 Rev, you read my mind on this one. Personally I am planning to run a SD tune. The tech articles on BD Engines site convinced me it's better than MAF tune.

Re: Throttle body top mounted ?

i guess i need to go without the MAF ...so far i just read a bit about SD Tuning..

i will get into the BD site asap...

So far i got some informations that the ECM goes automatically in the SD Modus without the MAF plug is installed...

is that right ??

Thx

Re: Throttle body top mounted ?

Yes, but its a little more complicated than that. The ECM uses VE and PE to fuel the engine, much like how a carb uses primary and secondary jetting.

The MAF is part of the engine control feedback loop and uses the measurement of Grams of air to provide a correction factor. The 02 sensors provide feedback on STFT & LTFT.

By unplugging the MAF, your setting that portion of feedback to "fail", and making the engine rely solely on its fuel and spark tables WITHOUT correction. This means that the engine doesn't "know" how much air is coming in, but can calculate how much "should" be coming in based on the speed (velocity) to calculate density (basically what the MAF measures). Essentially what this means is that the quality of the work being done on the VE, PE, and spark tables needs to be extremely good. It generally also means switching the operating system on the truck from a standard MAF-Tune, to an SD Custom-OS if your using HP Tuners.

Without getting into the whole debate about SD; it will in general make a little more power, and be even more beneficial if you start going into boost above what the stock MAF and MAP can measure. BUT its crucial that the street and WOT tuning are very well done (VE tables need to be corrected and smoothed, PE needs to be set properly, High and low octane tables both need to be fully repopulated). I would not suggest SD for people who are having simple mail-order tunes or flashes.

Re: Throttle body top mounted ?

hy

finally i will go with some individuals throttles from a BMW M3.
The throttles have a size of 52mm, so should be big enough for some future tunings :-)
Using the individual throttle bodies i have to go without a MAF. So i will have to tune it via HP Tuners respectivly do it with a expert. Its hard to find but we do have some LS experts also in Germany ;-)

For the intake manifold i am still fighting ...
Pls let me know which effect does have a high ram intake respectivly a low intake ???
pls consider that i still use the EFI setup.
Also i got an information that the position of the injectors have an effect on the performance....that means the bigger the difference between injector and intake valve the more rpm the engine can get..
Is that right ?

i am curious on ur response :-)

Thanks a lot
Achim
