What trans is preferred for the 69
Hey guys forgive me if this was asked before. I have a 3 speed gear box original to the truck. I have considered going to a 4 or 5 speed but unsure. If I decide to do this conversion down the road what tranny would be the best? Give a model number or what vehicle it comes from. Btw I have a drop in 350 crate from jegs. But plan to reinstall the original engine in after I rebuild it next year possibly. I also have the 307 rear so just wondering what u guys have done.
Thanks, Kris

I'm looking at a tremec TKO kit from hurst. Pricey but every last thing is included.

Re: What trans is preferred for the 69
A few questions that I usually start out with for our walk in customers.
Whats the overall goal of the truck? Does it have to be manual or would a automatic work for the overall goal? What kind of power do you plan to make? I like the 700R4 or 4l60e. Not a fan of rowing gears in SoCal traffic. But a stick is fun to drive when you get out of town. Kyle |

He's asking the same questions anyone building a project car needs to ask them selves before the first bolt is touched. Having a direction you the owner wants the truck to go in helps a lot in not doing things over 2 or 3 times...

Re: What trans is preferred for the 69
If you've already made up your mind then he shouldn't be asking these questions. In the case of the OP he doesn't know what trans he wants at all so these questions would be very pertinent.

If your gonna tow anything NV4500 if just riding and would like overdrive, NV3500 or even hybrid T-5. If an automatic is in order again if town [a lot] 4L80E or 200R4 if just riding around or the TH350 or 700R4 for a less money approach.

Best of luck to you on your conversion. I will retreat to my parts counter.

Re: What trans is preferred for the 69
Thanks guys for all your responses, not sure about the conversion just getting some info. I may just leave it original as is since the majority of the truck already is. U guys all gave me some good ideas, yea I want to keep it a stick shift, just thought the OD would be good. I don't use the truck much, I have the 09 to drive. I did have it in a small local car show the other night with vettes and what not, but the C10 got a lot of attention. The cool thing about it was people liked the original aspects of it which was pretty cool. Anyway thanks again for the comments. What ever I decided in the upcoming months I will let you guys know.
Kris

Re: What trans is preferred for the 69
My vote is GM Muncie 4 speed
Since your truck is an existing and original manual that is already "on the floor" you should consider a used factory GM 4 speed "Muncie". Consider the M-20 (nice wide gear ratios) or the M-21 (close ratio, softer 1st, tighter ratios). You may not have to change a thing except the shifter. A lot more fun and a little easier to drive (3 speed ratios are a bit spread out). They are quite durable and every hot rodder and trans/drivetrain ship is familiar with them. You should be able to craigs list one or call around to trans shops. $500-800. They came in every hot GM car in the 60's up to early 70's. Many options and all good - depending on $$, use and amount of work you want to do. The muncie should be very easy to do. |

Re: What trans is preferred for the 69
yoke, input spline, and driveshaft are the same as 3 spd on muncie swap

My god people get worked up around here. I have a factory 4 speed 465 behind my transplanted 400 (69 swb) it serves but gear changes are rediculously slow. If I'm not mistaken the sportier Muncie 4 speeds are just as much of a chore to put in as a th350 or th400. I had the fortune of finding a th475...square cut version of a th400. That will be the quest soon. I'm looking at a crossmember and shortening a shaft. Still 1:1 but for a toy who cares

Re: What trans is preferred for the 69
Of course you could have 3k under the mattress for a tremec with overdrive but....I traded my 250 inline to a guy who had a greasy old motor home transmission laying about.
