O/D Manual Transmission Options
Purchasing this 1978 SWB. It's a 292-6 with Granny 4spd and 4:11s.
Plan is to freshen the motor and replace the transmission with an overdrive model. If I stay manual what are my options with out going after market and is there something that shifts nicer than the older 4spd. Expecting to move and or modify the trans crossmember and drive line.

Re: O/D Manual Transmission Options
OD in stock form would either be a 700r4 or A833 if you can find one.

Re: O/D Manual Transmission Options
A833 was the only manual overdrive available in the squarebodies.
Also known as a New Process A833 (Mopar) trans; GM option was MY0/MY6. K

Re: O/D Manual Transmission Options
A T5 5sp would be perfect for an Inline6 level of power. Cheap and easy to locate. Your other oem options are the above mentioned A833[4sp], T56's[6sp], NV3500 and NV4500[5sp], and I think its the Tko6060[6sp] or something to that affect in the newer cars. Gm also did a really weird option in the 4th gen corvettes with a BW T10 4 speed and just the overdrive of a 700R4 bolted to the back. Kinda like a gear vendors unit. Nobody ever swaps them into anything so either they are rare as sh** or a very poor design.

Re: O/D Manual Transmission Options
the problem with the majority of those options is the amount of work involved.

Re: O/D Manual Transmission Options
Mustang T5 won't bolt right up but an S10 will, with an adapter from these guys (and you'll need the S10 tail housing anyway if installing in a bench seat truck): http://vintagemetalworks.blogspot.com/
Some details about S10 T5 install (but for a V8) here: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=482069 If THIS guy could do this swap, then pretty much anyone could do it... One note, even with the 292, you'll not want to be doing burnouts with a T5, it won't hold up - even a World Class T5. Some folks may have swapped in an NV4500, but I have never tried. |

V8 '83 Camaro T5 (with S10 tail shaft) in my '78 short step with 250...Don't be fooled by the people that say it's too weak...I've had mine loaded up with yard waste and other junk multiple times, and it's still good after 4 years. Unless you try to break it, it will be fine.

Re: O/D Manual Transmission Options
I'm putting a T5 in my 74. They'll take some abuse before they give up. And the 292 would be great with that trans behind it.

Not sure if the S10 is the same as the Jeep T5, but I know the Jeep T5 and the mustang are two totally different animals. Novak says of the T5 "A strengthened version of the T5 called the "World Class" was available and parts were formerly available to address some of the transmission's weaknesses. However, even with these, splines shear and the cases stretch under torque and no such upgrades could prevent some failures. "' "Because of the weaknesses of this transmission, we do not make adapter assemblies to join it to other transfer cases." GM engine swap "Because of the transmission's weak service record behind stock Jeep powerplants, we do not offer any conversion to V6 or V8 power. This is essentially a small car transmission in a truck. The customer's time and efforts are best spent converting to a stronger transmission. These details are •In 1982, Jeep introduced the Borg Warner T4 & T5 Transmissions, respectively four and five-speed gearboxes, the latter featuring an overdriven final gear. The above transmissions are not appropriate to retain in a V6 or V8 conversion. Novak made a bellhousing adapter for them for a short time, but the futility of adapting an engine to a gearbox that just would not last became self-explanatory. Because of these transmissions' weak service records behind stock Jeep powerplants, we do not offer any conversion to V6 or V8 power. This is essentially a small car transmission in a truck. The customer's time and efforts are best spent converting to a stronger transmission. I'd go NV4500 if I was going to go through the trouble of swapping in an OD transmission. |
