gas gauge goofy after cleaning
I remove my gauges for cleaning years off dirt out. I put the gas gauge needle at empty and re-installed. When I started it up the gas gauge goes to the 3:00 position. The tank is full, but this is way past the full mark. Gauges do look nice though!!! What is wrong?

Re: gas gauge goofy after cleaning
The tan wire that runs from the sender to the fuse block isn't connected properly, or there is a break in the wire somewhere.
I'll try and find some threads to help you out more if you don't get it fixed soon. I'll assume it worked before you cleaned the gauges? |

VetteVet is our resident electrical guru, and has at one time or another outlined just about every possible issue that is found with the fuel gauge, and how to fix it. Best of luck!!!!! |

Re: gas gauge goofy after cleaning
Thanks for the thread. I just put on 70 miles and the gauge never moved. When I pulled the dash gauges out I noticed the wiring back there was full of twist on connectors and clipped wires. The gauge was working, so I must have knocked some wires loose back there. Looks like some troubleshooting is in store!

Re: gas gauge goofy after cleaning
Find the fuse panel FUEL terminal and fur a wire from there to a good ground. With the key on the gauge needle should move to dead empty. If it does the problem is between the fuse panel and the sending unit in the tank, if it doesn't move then you have an under the dash wiring problem.

Re: gas gauge goofy after cleaning
Found a loose connection- problem solved. Only now my dash lights only work on one side and the turn signals indicators are on. I suspect another grounding problem.
