what can I do about this rust and how bad is it?????

I am putting vintage air in my truck and while pulling everything out I found what seems to be a thin scale surface rust under my dash and inside where the heater box was located. The truck is completely rust free everywhere else and basically restored. I don't think its bad it just looks as if its never had any paint.

What can I do and use chemical wise to stop this short of having to tape the whole interior off and spray it? is there any kind of role on rust/paint inhibitor???

Stay tuned for pictures!!!!

Its really just scaly surface rust you can barely feel/ Heres the worst of it in the cowl area.

It does not look to be malignant...just superficial. Por-15 should do the trick. At the rate of oxidation that is occurring, as long as it's stored inside, I can't see anything to worry about.

Re: what can I do about this rust and how bad is it?????

I don't believe it's bad at all. It's just bothering me. Last question! There's not a trace of rust in the cowl when you look down into it. Would I be safe just getting the inside the best I can from the heater box or should I take the cowl off. I would rather not risk scratching it. Also what's the best brush used to apply por15 bristle or sponge brush. Thanks guys

Re: what can I do about this rust and how bad is it?????

Those surfaces were never painted/coated. The inside of the roof and inside of the rockers will look the same. Modern cars go through a zinc tank bath after being welded into a shell.

I used Eastwoods Rust Encapsulator on my Mustang for the same thing. Of course, knock the rust down with sandpaper, wire brush, those scuff pads, whatever you can get in there with.

Some people have even thinned it out and used one of these garden sprayers to get inside the cowl, etc. The cowl is easy to get off, just put a couple lines of tape on both sides of cowl and opposite body panel (door, fender) and have someone help you take it off. The wipers are the hardest part (they have a tab that wraps under the head) to take off.

I used the cheapest brushes I can find at crapmart. The stuff dries so fast, they're pretty much crap after one use, and it flows pretty well to lose the brush appearance. What's weird about encapsulator, is that it's dry to a light touch really fast, but takes a good day to fully dry, and I learned that if the temp is below 60* or 50*, it can take up to 3 days.

...and it makes A MESS. WEAR GLOVES. The crap takes DAYS to get off your hands.

Around here that's called "rust free" ....Por 15 type paints work well but getting it into every nook and cranny under the dash will be a challenge.Don't get it in your eyes...or anywhere on your skin...

Re: what can I do about this rust and how bad is it?????

For the insignificant rust shown in the photos, I would simply use a rust converter available in spray cans. With a spray bomb, you will be better able to coat the rust in places it may be difficult to reach with a brush. Find the better quality rust converters, not the ones you find at the big box stores. Eastwood would be an example.
