High mount alternator brackets for SBC with short water pump?

Seems to be not too many alternatives out there...(& especially if you don't want chrome)

Already mounted the water pump & SWP bracket for the PS on the drivers side. Thought some of the brackets for 60s - 70s Vettes might work.

Camaro sbc stuff is all Long water pump...

Here we are...

...if I could find this in black/plain steel I think that would do it -

The one you showed below your engine bolts to the left exhaust manifold.

Take a look at this one on Ebay, several vendors sell the same one for about the same price. it mounts inside the left valve cover.

Re: High mount alternator brackets for SBC with short water pump?

the bracket you have posted works fine with the proper exhaust manifold
but with headers it needs the bracket on the right too, not a good look, it looks cobbled together

i beat this drum all the time... front accessory brackets are easy and cheap to fabricate
some of the universal fit brackets are down right cheesy and flimsy looking too

all of my brackets cost me less than $30, mostly for new bolts and the ac belt tensioner

Re: High mount alternator brackets for SBC with short water pump?

I looked at Alan Groves site, which has the plain steel I'm looking for. At first I thought it was too bulky looking, but the actual view, with everything under the hood buttoned up, is not so bad. I'm going to powder coat it anyway. Most important...functionally, with tri-power, tall valve covers and access needed to the Saginaw pump below, it looks like a good choice.

Make sure you pay attention to the pulleys too. Short and long WP use different WP and crank pulleys and are not interchangeable with different offsets and diameters. Also, contrary to what you will read on line BB are not compatible. And if you add AC to the mix there are specific pairs for the three groove bottom pulley. I have a whole box of pulleys I bought before I got the right matched pair I needed.

Orrie put out some good advice there. Remember that if you decide to go to a serpentine belt system they require a different water pump than a the pumps that use V belts.

Re: High mount alternator brackets for SBC with short water pump?

Well, not going with a serpentine belt system... Got the bracket from Alan Grove coming & swp pulleys for the fan & crank. He's helpful to run your project by & has good information on routing, etc. on his website. PS pump/pulley/bracket is from Borgeson & is set up for swp...so, we'll see how it works out.

.
just my two cents... Are you a bodyman?
.
looses those keeper washer on all 4 water pump bolts.
Replace with lock washers
also the bolt hole on the right side front of block (by fuel pump)
needs a bolt with silicone sealant..... or you will have oil leak issues
.

Re: High mount alternator brackets for SBC with short water pump?

Grants Pass, I was a Caveman once, moved to the Phx area in 85. Was a plywood guy, got tired of getting laid off every winter.

Is your tri-power hooked up with mechanical linage? I just did a 348 in a 2-dr 58 stick shift wagon today. Guy told me it has 100% original stuff, but when I got there it had some goofy progressive linkage instead of the original vacuum setup. It was a PITA considering the paid big bux for NOS original carbs.

Get a better pic of the linkage stuff on your carbs? I'd like to see what you have and hear your opinion of how it works/runs.

Re: High mount alternator brackets for SBC with short water pump?

MiraclePieCo - Hard to focus on that bracket when looking at that beautiful trips set up!

- I will post the finished set up when done - had some delays/side tracked, but the rest of the parts will be coming in next week.

- We're onto the bolt hole that leads to an oil galley - just haven't got there yet..

Note: as has been mentioned, getting the right pulleys can be a slippery path. We've also had to change the WP (thankfully at NC). Seems there are two short WPs...the one you want is 5-5/8" & the one you don't want is about 5-3/4" -5-7/8" . Those "longer short pumps" are for Corvettes (and many, many variations)...67-68 Chevelle spec is a good pick.

Why the 2-groove pulley on the water pump and PS pump?

Re: High mount alternator brackets for SBC with short water pump?

Thanks for the compliments on my tri-power. It was set up with all stock original carbs - no kits. I left the power valves in the outer carbs, just blocked off the idle circuits. Home-made progressive linkage. It started and ran perfectly, no bogs or stumbles throughout the RPM range. Idled perfectly and got great gas mileage on the center single. No choke, so a little cold-blooded in winter. The secret to using stock carbs is to make sure the butterflies seat perfectly in the end carbs to prevent vacuum leaks.

This was in a '31 Ford PU I built and have since sold. Here's a closeup of the linkage:

Stock 67-72 mounts for small block might work for you. Kind of personal preference

Second this!

I installed his stuff in my 36 Ford PU with a 67 Chevy 327 SB. Worked great!

DIY. Baking soda + water in bucket + battery charger. Attach plated bracket to positive cable, scrap steel to negative cable. Part will "un-plate" within a few minutes.

That is a nice looking setup. It gets it up out of your way but may raise the alternator up too high in the line of view for some guys.
