427 bb details, what are you running?

Hey is anyone out there running a 427? de-stroked or otherwise, am thinking of having one put together , all roller, coated pistons, balanced mostly stock lower end, and mild upper end (performer stuff mostly), 049 heads, hei, etc. Would like to get 400hp to the ground. Just wondering if anyone wanted to share their combo and how it works, hp, mileage, reliability, grin factor. thanks

i think most of the people here running 427s are running the tall deck version from the medium/heavy trucks.

would`nt take much to get 400hp from a 427. the 049 heads are good and look for 9-10 to 1 compression and a comp or isky 280 hydralic cam, performer rpm manifold and a 750cfm carb. my buddy had a 427 in his 55 p/u that was pretty fast and it was basicaly stock with the comp 280 magnum cam. his was 10.25 to1, totally stock small valve closed chamber oval ports, performer rpm and a 830 holley. never ran it at the track but dumping the clutch at 35 mph would get the 29x 18.5 mickeys burnin hard.

Well...Combo is mostly in my sig. Block and heads (closed chambers small valves, 10.25 compression moderately ported) are stock '69 car standard deck 427. Runs pretty good but really needs slicks to hook up. Gas mileage sucks in the 9-10 mpg. The short stroke will rev quick in low and really tight. If I was going to build an engine to race I would go with a 454. Pretty easy to stroke them bigger and the extra cubes will pull the added weight of a truck better. We just ran the Chevelle with the 454 a few weeks ago and without tuning it ran 12.teens. 11's will be very attainable. I have a lot of fun with it and at the cruises always getting asked, "is that a 'real' 427?" Just somethin' cool about havin a "427"

I would have to agree with Jeff M. My 427 ran like a raped ape in a 3200 pound car that I often wound up pretty tight. It was much more fun than the 454 that was in it before. Putting the 427 in my 4x4 where torque gives the biggest benefit is still fun but I would go with a 454 in a truck next time. Oh, and it is a short deck with 049 heads and 9:1 static compression. The heads have been refitted with larger valves too.

Before I read Breeh's post I was already thinking what he wrote. Because the trucks are heavy I would go more cubes....I have a 427 in my Chevelle but it's much lighter and it's built to wind out.

Go 454 or 468 or 496.

427

You have the opportunity to proudly run a Chevy 427.More cubic inches isn't allways better. In the long run, most diehard racers wish they had a 427.The 427 will spin faster because of a shorter stroke and kick ass on a 502 off the line.
Bottom line is you will raise more eyebrows with a 427 than with a
454 or 502.
My 69 CST came with a 396 BB with 396 Emblems on the fenders.
I'm a machinist and plan on making a one of a kind "427" fender emblem.
The picture below shows my 427 in my truck
Chevy and Ford don't share many things, don't let Ford have too many 427's

I run a 427 in my Chevelle, have 206 closed chamber heads, 2.19/1.88 valves, mild bowl port and runner clean up. The pistons are KB 149's with a 17cc pop up on top for a final static compression of 10.8-1. I also have a Ultradyne .630 lift solid cam, RPM manifold, 800 Holley, and a hopped up HEI that has been curved for the engine. I have seen the better side of 7000+ and it still wants more with this set up.

While the idle quality suffers a bit (900-1000 in gear, 8hg of vacuum) it will run with the best of 'em. Jeff M will verify, it will get sideways at 40mph under full throttle. A handfull, but there are compromises to be had. Mostly tuning fussiness and drivibility suffers.

You can get 400hp to the ground with less though, run oval heads (781/049) and a hyd cam with .550 lift/.280 duration range and you are there.

Here is a good comparison...

I too have a 427...in a 66 Chevelle...full race motor, race gas only, Reher Morrison heads, full roller valve train, 5500 stall, yup it pulls hard, shifts at 7200, light car ...about 750hp.

My 71 Cheyenne....502, forged steel lower end, full roller, "pump gas"....yup pump gas...660hp and about 500lb/ft of torque from 2500 and 625 at 4800.

Sure the Chevelle off the line may pull away but it aint do to power....traction and setup is completely different.

Money for money and for a pump gas motor....my bet is on cubic inches.

'67shortie does have a strong pullin Chevelle and breakin em loose at 40+ is definately cool. But as much as I love the 427, a 454 isn't any more expensive to build and for the same money you will have more power with the '54.

thanks for all the input guys, is mileage and reliabilty worth discussing here? More cubes is a good thing, are there any other differences worth noting between the 427 and 454? same bore less stroke, what are the trade offs for a daily driver w/400hp at the rear wheels?
