71 Stepvan gear change

Been looking around and I'm having trouble finding the right series carrier. Research says we got a 3.73-4.10 gears and we're trying to go to a 3.08. I would love to put 3.08's on what I got but not sure if it will work. Thanks for any help.

Re: 71 Stepvan gear change

A 3:08 ring and pinion will not fit on the carrier in your rear end, if your stepvan is a Chevy it should have a trailing arm rear suspension, you might just search around for 3:08 rear axle assembly out of a 71-72 Chevy pickup, a majority of them came with the 3:08 ratio and will bolt right into your P10

Re: 71 Stepvan gear change

If it is a 71 with the factory 5 lug axles, yes it is the same width as the pickups

Re: 71 Stepvan gear change

FYI... you may want to double check me on this... but...
I believe the wheel bolt pattern on your van may be 5 on 4-3/4"
So swapping in a different rearend may lead to other changes,
such as swapping your orig van housing axles back in or else a wheel change.
But please double check your wheel bolt pattern as I could be wrong.
Pick-ups are 5 on 5" and I think vans are 5 on 4-3/4"

Re: 71 Stepvan gear change

It is in fact 5 4-3/4. I guess I'll just buy a carrier and gears since it's prolly easier and maybe cheaper than a trans swap. I got lucky with the van, came with a small Chevy pattern and discs up front.

Super cool P10! Did you check your bolt pattern? My '73 is 5x5.
