Re: Converted Stock Radio and Ashtray Mod Question

I have it back, and it's installed but I'm still a was from testing it out. At the time I sent mine out the turn-around time was 2 weeks.

I'm planning on having the truck on the road this summer, just registered it yesterday and applied for the tittle, this was mostly so I could get it insured.

The unit was completely cleaned and reworked. All of the functions operate though various tricks with the existing knobs and pushbuttons. It really is slick.
You can see that the unit looks as original as before. The bluetooth microphone and pairing button have standard pin connections in the back of the unit with plenty of cabling to locate it wherever you want.

Next, I want to take out the exisitng ashtray and replace with the BMW sourced extending cup holder and also make a panel for the pairing button, microphone and add a built-in usb power port.

Now to my question. Does anyone have any suggestions about a set of low profile side hinges that to hide my franken cupholder control panel assembly with the existing ashtray front plate. I think it would only need to swing down 90 degrees to allow the cupholder to clear.

Its been 2 years since you installed your converted radio and I'm wondering how often you use the radio and if there have been any issues with it.

Re: Converted Stock Radio and Ashtray Mod Question

For your cup holder can you fit it in an old ashtray? Maybe cut the bottom of the tray out and mount your beemer transplant to the inside? If the one you have works the same way as the one in my wife's ride does there have to be room underneath for it to "unfold" once it's extended? If you go with the piano hinge and simply fold down the faceplate will this give your apparatus enough room to operate correctly?
