You can get VHS tapes converted to DVD now. I know that Walgreen's does it, I'm sure that several other places will do the same thing.

You can convert movies to various movie file formats, but you need a video capture card on your computer.

VHS
IF you can't get it done I have a capture card and 4 DVD Burners. I would be happy to help. Free if I could keep a copy.
Thanks Charlie ceoliver@fuse.net

There's not a lot to it. I do this for a living with my Mac. The steps may be different if using a PC.
First, you have to capture the video onto your computer. If its a digital source (such as DV or mini DV) I can capture straight into my Mac using the built in Firewire. If it's an analog signal (VHS, 8mm, etc.) I can capture through my digital-analog converter. Either way, the footage is digitized and stored on the computer. It's REALLY big at this point. Second, if any editing needs to be done, I bring the footage into Final Cut Pro. Here we add all the cool stuff...transitions, overlays, etc. If the footage is already edited (say someone sends me a movie they edited with their VCR), I may also add chapter markers if the final output is going to be DVD. Next is output. If the movie is intended for DVD I break out DVD Studio Pro and add all the relevant assets (menus, alternate tracks, etc.). If the final destination is for the web, I import the movie into Cleaner where I can compress the HUGE file sizes down to a smaller, more easily downloadable size. This also gives me the option of what type of output (MPEG, Quicktime, Windows Media, Real, etc.). The movie is then ready for posting on the web. <<edited spelling>> |
