Awesome. Small world indeed. I raced at Mid State in the 90's. We always used a ton of stuff including engines from S&M.

Loving the truck build so far. You guys are ahead of me so I will be watching this build for good ideas.

Very cool! A lot of national championships were won by guys who cut their teeth at Midstate. I miss those days

Nice work on the firewall. I really liked the shaved wire harness channel.

Re: Father/Son 67 SWB project- Picture Heavy

I havnt updated for a while because I changed my plans a little after finishing my chassis. After looking at all of the killer builds on here that are on the ground, I knew this is what I wanted to do to our truck. I wish I would have known about Porterbuilt before I bought the Ridetech stuff but live and learn I guess. If I was going to change the course of our build, now was the time to do it.

I recently sold my existing chassis without the 12 bolt and Kore 3 brakes and replaced it with another 67 SWB frame that I got from a member on here. I have already cut all the rivets and stripped it down to bare rails. I have front and rear extreme drop members and all the other PB goodies on order to get the stance I want.

It's going to be hard to wait for the PB parts to arrive but It will be worth it in the end. While we are waiting for Everything to come in, I'm going to finish assembling the engine, finish the metal work on the cab and try to start collecting parts so I'm ready when everything gets here.

I also need to figure out how I'm going to raise the bed floor. This is my only unknown right now. I'm probably going to steal ideas from several on here.

I have read thread after thread of guys eagerly waiting on PB parts so now I get to go through it. It's kind of a right of passage I guess.

This website is good for making you change your plans I keep looking at my build and saying...."hmm I should just go ahead and c notch it, hmm I should go ahead and get 3" exhaust and 1 7/8 headers in case I turbo, etc etc"

If your going full porter built and sitting in the weeds its gonna be sick!

Keith,

You should share "some" of the blame on this. Your thread, as well as Justin's "69Short", Russ "RRC" and "Mooseknuckles" threads put me over the edge They are all inspiring to say the least. I hope my stuff can be mentioned in the same breath as your builds when it's finished.

Re: Father/Son 67 SWB project- Picture Heavy

Mike - Years ago my then 16 year old son and I worked on our first Father-Son project. It was a rust-free 1969 Camaro that we purchased for $2800 (this was 1989) and drove the car home. I was able to keep him busy in our 1 car garage for a couple of years and never wondered where he was. He sold the car on Ebay years later and had a nice down payment on his first house. I have attached a photo of the finished car. It's a win-win either way you look at it.

Porterbuilt is the way to go. Well engineered, strong and extremely functional parts.

Oh, I kinda' like that blue '66 Chevelle there in the shop, too.

I have had my boy by my side in the shop since he could walk. Those memories are more valuable to me then anything in the world. It sounds like you have those same memories with you son. Good times!

Re: Father/Son 67 SWB project- Picture Heavy

Shortly after I bought our truck I was able to find a low mileage L96. I'm going to eliminate the VVT and its going to get a Brian Tooley cam, new lifters, BTR springs, timing chain, new oil pump and a low profile pan. While its apart I'm going to have the heads milled and have a valve job done.

We plan on staying with the truck intake and accessories for now. The L96 is a flex fuel version of the L92 and has bigger injectors. I'm hoping these will work out for the new set up. You gotta love factory 15* cylinder heads!

Re: Father/Son 67 SWB project- Picture Heavy

Sub'd I'm building a 70 gmc with my 12 yr old son. He's like your boy excited about the truck but it's football season and we're spending all our spare time at practices and games, and not getting a thing done on the truck. I built a CJ5 with my dad in high school, I look back and it was the best time of my life. Still mad at him for selling it after I got married and went to college. Building a truck yourself gives you respect and pride for it plus you tend to take care of it since you put so much blood sweat and tears into it. Thanks being an example to us! I'm going to show my son this thread and maybe it will motivate him to work with me in the shop.

Pretry sure this has been harder on me then on my boy He is starting to come around a little but unfortunately he just doesn't have my passion for cars. I'm still trying to cope with that.

It's 48x48 and sits on the cab supports. The castors are 6" from Harbor Freight.

Re: Father/Son 67 SWB project- Picture Heavy

It's been awhile since I posted anything. I had wrist surgery in May and am just getting back to feeling useful and being able to get back out in the shop. We are still plugging away on my son's 67 but we have had some issues which is a nice way of saying I'm dealing with a teenager that hasn't been very motivated. (about the truck that is) He's plenty motivated about sports, being with his buddies and chasing girls, just not about his truck.

My agreement with him all along has been I will give him 100% of my free time and fund most of his project as long as he is by my side working with me. Well right before my surgery I found myself working on his truck by myself much more than together with him. So I cleaned the shop a few weeks ago and put his truck in the corner and covered it up. I told him whenever he is ready to just let me know and I will stop whatever I'm doing and we will dig back in on his project. I will not sell it but I will not build it by myself and give it to him. So it will sit until he's ready. Breaks my heart because I feel like he's growing away from me but I know it's just a stage and he will come back around.

Starting this project with my boy definitely lit a fire under me about these trucks. I'm totally hooked and I wanted one for myself. I can't give in on my decision to park my boys truck and lose credibility with him though. He needs to know I'm serious and decide how bad he wants it. So I did the next best thing and I started looking for a truck for myself to build. I found an extremely clean medium olive 1970 long bed that I had to have.

It came with a ton of old documents including the original order sheet, protect o plate and a stack of maintenance receipts dating all the way back to 1971. It is super original and extremely clean. I'm probably going to piss some people off that I'm going to change it but I'm going to build it the way I want it.

The great news is when we brought it home my son was totally jacked about it. I think this might get him motivated again or at least I hope it does. I don't want to start a 2nd build thread so I will just throw some updates on this thread.

The truck is definitely getting the bed cut down. I already have a SWB frame that I'm building so I will put this body on my current frame. I'm leaving the paint as is and keeping the exterior as original as possible other than wheels.

The interior is plain and just how I want it so its staying the same as well. It will get vhx guages because of the ls motor but everything else will be stock down to the rubber floor mat. Underneath though, it's getting the full treatment.

*full Porterbuilt level 3 drop members, trailing arm suspension, control arms and their crossmembers.

*accuair air management

*LS/4l65

*Vintage air

*C5Z06 brakes front and rear

I already have everything on the shelf except the PB stuff

My Porterbuilt order doesn't ship for a couple weeks so I started on the LS motor this past weekend. I bought a 6.0 pullout out of a 2010 3/4 ton from my local wrecking yard. The truck had 36,000 miles on it.

I pulled it apart because I wanted to see how clean it was and I want to eliminate the VVT.(it didn't have AFM which surprised me) The cylinders looked great and didn't have any taper. Rod and main bearings looked great too. What I did find though was the #2 cam bearing had witness marks from the factory camshaft oil groove. So I went ahead and pulled it all the way apart and had the block hot tanked and new cam bearings installed and had the crank polished.

I got the short block assembled this weekend and upgraded the cam to one of Brian Tooley's stage 2 LS3 cams. It's not going to be super lumpy but it should have a decent idle and make great usable power.

I had a valve job done and I installed a set of BTR's platinum springs. I was impressed with his spring package. With his locators and no shims they all came in right at 1.770-1780 installed height. I should have the engine buttoned up before the suspension stuff starts showing up.

I'm sorry this is so long, I didn't realize how much I typed until just now so I'm going to stop here. I will post some pics soon.

Mike

Thanks Jason.. It already energized him a little. He helped me finish up the short block tonight and wanted to take the truck for a drive when we got done. He's a great kid, I'm cutting him some slack. I remember how I was at that age and I'm glad he's not like I was
