Hello
What is the round plastic canister? How or what does it hook up to?
Thanks, Mike

It's a vacuum reservoir. It store's vacuum so your A/C and cruise control will remain working when there is a larger load or vacuum demand on the engine.

There should be a small check valve placed in the hose just b4 it if you are gonna reconnect it.

It just hooks up to any vacuum connection on the intake manifold.

Re: What is this

Ok. The cruise works, so it must be for a/c. So a vaccum hose comes from the carb to the top. How does it get to the a/c controls? Thanks. mike

What you need to do is get a check Vlv and some vac hose cut a 1" piece of hose place it on the can nipple then place the ck vlv on the hose then hook Engine Vac to top of ck vlv be sure it's in the right ordination and then run a hose from the ck vlv nipple to your A/C Control head and anything else that may require it.

Here is a typical Vacuum check valve. you don't have to get one with two take offs there are many different types.

Re: What is this

I'd guess that your truck was or still is a big block. It's a vac reservoir, big blocks don't make good vac at times and need the reservoir to keep up good vac.
