Exhaust system combo's question

Hey guys, I just recently finished doing a top end on my c10 and did some tranny work while I was in there. It's a 1970 c10 LWB with a fresh 355 and th400 trans with 2600rpm stall. I did 180cc ProTopline heads with 67cc chambers and 2.02 1.64's. Went with a Comp 280h and Edelbrock RPM manifold and 650 AVS carb. Truck is right around 10-1 compression, maybe a hair over, pretty healthy build.

Truck is driven only when I have a hinkering for fun and speed and noise isn't an issue. Right now it's got Hooker long tube headers with I believe 1 5/8" primaries and 3" collectors. Has some mail order bolt on exhaust kit with 2 1/4" pipe and 40 series flowmasters dumped at the rear axle. Sounds decent but flows always do, especially with some compression.

Do my header primary tubes seem big enough for this motor or could more be had with 1 3/4 primaries? The 2 1/4 bolt on kit is getting pulled out for a manderel bent 2 1/2" or 3" custom exhaust. I love dual Flowmasters dumped at the axle, sounds very burly and fits a muscle truck. But I'm thinking of trying something I haven't seen, and hoping I'll love it. Here's my questions.

1) on our trucks, do you benefit from using an X or H pipe rather than straight duals, and how do they sound? I had a 1993 5.0 mustang (not the same I know) and I tried an X and an H pipe and they had two VERY distinct sounds to them. I tried with tail pipes and dumped at the axel.

2) has anybody tried the Borla Stingers muffler? They sound AMAZING on those newer Mustangs, a sound like no other muffler. Like a combination between the old school 40 series flows, and a Corsa kit on a corvette. My thinking is, take that Borla muffler, and stick it on a roudy 350 with a big lopey cam and see what happens.

Any input on H and X pipes would be great. As well as your experience with different combos of pipes and mufflers and what they sounded like. I'm not sold on the Borlas yet but really considering it. No idea about X and H pipes on old trucks but open to new things

Re: Exhaust system combo's question

I ran the Doug Thorley's with an X-pipe, Flow master 40's with 2.5 all the way out the back and loved it. I remember the Distinct sound of the 302 mustangs with the H pipe when we were racing and always loved the sound.
Performance wise it's been proven on Dyno's the X pipe will give you better numbers then H, none or open headers. The biggest issue is sizing your headers and piping for your engines specs so you get just the right amount of back pressure. I've seen a half inch mistake (upping a mustangs exhaust to 3.5) costing almost a second in the 1/4.
definitely do your research for your numbers and size it correct, including the headers, I hate to see people spend so much good money and leave HP on the table that could have easily been used if the specs were right.
As far as sound I would literally just cruise you tube for sound clips, what sounds good to me may sound like junk to you.

just my .02

Good luck and let us know what you picked.

How does that X pipe sound with 40's compared to regular duals?

Re: Exhaust system combo's question

I did mine all at once so I can't compare. I would spend some time listening to engine music on you tube for a better idea. That's how I chose my motorcycle exhaust and was very happy.
I can tell you it's loud. I could easily get on it and set off sensitive car alarms.
I once had a guy follow me off the freeway just to get a better listen to it lol.

If I remember right the X pipe gives it a much crisper and higher pitch when combined with tail pipes. Having turndowns sounds great but I am leaning towards something real different than I have always gone with. I'm hoping somebody has used Borla mufflers on this site. There are a few different kinds Borla makes too

I looked on my phone so it doesn't give details, is that Borla? Sounds decent but not much time at idle to really hear it

Sounded pretty cool, definitely different than the original Flowmasters. Would it be possible to get a sound clip of your truck idling and a small rev? You could email it to me or text me? I know that's quite a request, but maybe that will help me decide if I wanna keep my flows and just get an X pipe

Also is your X pipe custom made or is it from Summit/Jegs?

There used to be a paint that you would paint a strip down the exhaust after the collector on header systems and it would change colors to indicate where the h or x pipe would be best installed if I remember right usually 11-13 inches past the collector for best tone and performance

You need more engine before you'll ever need 3 inch exhaust

Re: Exhaust system combo's question

Unless you are trying to eek out every last ounce, the 1 5/8" headers will be fine, especially with the 2 1/2" exhaust.

It looks like you have a nice mix of parts. How much gear is in the truck and how tall are the tires in the back?

I know you have spent $ on a trans already, but if you want to get as much performance as you can out of it 3.73 posi and a TH200 4R will really give you a pop out of the hole and let you cruise it on the highway as well.

I've been thinking about that lately. Most definitely going with a 3.73 and TruTrac for the rear end. I'm not sold on a tranny swap YET, but once I figure out all the details about the swap and exactly what it takes to do successfully, I may be more motivated to do it.

Re: Exhaust system combo's question

My x pipe was made by the muffler shop that did my install local, nothing fancy.
Sorry I can't provide an audio clip since my truck is torn down and in storage at the moment. I hope I get it back driving by the end of summer.

Re: Exhaust system combo's question

1 5/8 headers are plenty. David Freiburger tested out dyno numbers on restricted headers that were bashed so bad they were almost shut and the engine lost practically nothing.

Wow those things sound mean while it's idling. Gonna have to look more into those. I kindof like that crackly exhaust note when there's a big cam

Those pypes violators are sounding great. I've also been listening to some videos of Magnaflow mufflers on SBC with big cams. Read they have wool packing inside though
