C-10 questions
I just bought a 71 C-10 4x4 from a friend, and was wondering about some of its options.
Inside the glovebox it has options like LS9 350, Positraction axle, factory lock-outs, and heavy front springs. it also has a "lev-o-gauge" in the middle where a tach might go. it almost looks aftermarket. it has an air buble in it. The truck is in good mechanical shape, but the body is ruff. the box is actully good but the cab needs rockers, corners fenders and doors. but all the parts cam with it besides one door and inner fenders. I just wondered what options were uncommon and basiclly just want to learn more about the truck. Zach |

Your K-10 sounds pretty cool.
The options you listed are pretty much common items, the Posi is semi hard to find, and I am not sure on your lock outs since i don't mess with the 4X4 stuff... The level guage sounds like a J.C.Whitney thing to me. |

The lev o gauge isnt original. Maybe to level out a camper, or for 4x4ing?

could you take a picture of your gauges... I'm curious to see exactly what your talking about!
I also thought about it being something like out of JC Whitney, but why would it be on the options tag?!

no, the levo gauge isnt on the options sheet. it looks period correct though, but that doesnt mean anything. it also has a cool stewart werner tach, but its not original
i'll take pics as soon as i get a chance. the gauge is like a level, that had fluid in it, and had an air buble like a carpenters level would. its cool, but its broken ALSO... it has lights on top of the cab, is that original, the options sheet says marker lights, is that for cab lights? three in the middle and one on each side |

the cab lights are pretty rare on a truck that isn't a one ton...i have them myself, and think they make the truck look big rig-ish. bumps on the cab roof, right? they aren't really valuable, though, just cool.
lockouts are an option, but I have never seen a 4x4 67-72 that does not have them listed. also, the LS9 is the basic truck 350. could be 2 or 4 bolt mains. i know, i wondered about that on mine, because my mind got a little ahead of itself and I thought "LS6????!!!!" according to the owners manual it has 255 hp/355 tq, but I kinda doubt that.

You will find tons of those cab clearance light lenses at the junkyard, believe it or not. GM trucks used those particular lenses thru 1991.5 on the V-series crew cabs and suburbans. any 73-87 you see with them has the same lenses, unless they are aftermarket add ons. They also came on big trucks from that time frame too. Make sure that the bases arent cracked by where the screws go, and then buy new SS screws, and you are ready to bling.
You can also buy new from a variety of places, like GMC Pauls, LMC, or a GM parts dealer, but they will be more pricey.

Some observations:
1. The tinted glass is somewhat unusual without A/C. Every A/C truck I've had also had tinted glass but very few non-A/C trucks had it. Could be a regional thing observation however, not much shade in the heartland. 2. Floor board indicates the fleetside bed had the optional wooden floor. 3. Front wheel locking hubs indicates the 4 wheel drive option, nothing more. The wording is odd and leads to confusion, why not just label it "4 wheel drive"? 4. Marker lamps. Those are your factory installed roof lights. 5. Rear step bumper. The factory installed either a step bumper or a "sport" bumper, or no bumper at all. Some dealerships ordered trucks without bumpers and installed their own custom bumpers complete with permenant advertising for the dealership. 6. Heavy front spring. Indicates 3 leafs instead of 2 on the front springs. 7. The number inside the "SE" box indicated this truck was a special order. Meaning the buyer had it built to his or her specs, not picked off the lot from available inventory. (Man I miss those days). If I had to guess, I'd say your truck was built for a buyer that had some specific "work chore" duty in mind for it. I say that because of the wood floor, the HD alternator, HD front springs, 4x4, and roof light options. Hope this helps your quest to understand your trucks "roots".

thats awesome info!!!
i know the truck is originally from new york, it has the dealers stuff in the glovebox and a sticker on the back window. its weird, why would anyone want a wood bed? idk. but it does have a different box on it, with a steel floor so it must have rusted out. i think it must not have been a work truck, because its actully in decent shape and has 78,000 miles only, but i could have been wrong, and it has 4x4 club stickers on it thanks, zach |

The wood floor option was generally marketed on the basis of 2 selling points:
1. Loads tended to shift less, especially livestock. That is why a lot of farm trucks have this option. 2. It was a strudier platform for a slide in RV camper. Even though your truck does not have the "Camper Special" option, it could have been built to haul a slide-in camper. That would explain the wood floor and lack of abuse. Still a "work" purpose, just not the abusive kind. Anyway this is all guesswork by me, but from logical deduction.
