steering column

have a 50 gmc installing a 350 i have moved the stock steering box over everything ive read said people do it a 1 1/2 i had to go 1 3/4 in order to have enough room for all 4 bolts notched firewall and now my steering location is alot off from inside cab location is that norm or are people only using two bolts in box and tweaking column over
