Remote Trans Cooler
Ok wasn't sure if I should post here or in the engine & drivetrain section but think this might be better here. I am currently building a 67 with 6.0 & 4L80e swap and ordered a transmission cooler for the truck. The truck will eventually get a decent sized cam and aftermarket converter and wanted to make sure I bought a cooler that would keep the trans cool enough for primarily street use and light track use.
This is what I ordered for a standalone cooler. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/der-13950 When I called Derale though, the tech guy said I should order this cooler if I wanted to run the cooler as a standalone because he said the 13950 would have to be run with the radiator trans cooler to keep the trans cool enough especially with a high stall converter. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/der-13960?ibanner=MobileSwitchNo So I guess the question is, should I go though the hassle of returning the cooler I bought and get the 13960, or will I be ok sticking with the 13950? Other than difference in thickness, they don't seem seem that different to me. And I'd prefer to not have to use the radiator cooler.

I'm running a slightly more aggressive version of the same setup, and using a Derale cooler like that. Mine looks like the first one, but I'd have to check my receipt log for a part # (I have the install of it in my build tho).
I don't run it through the radiator, and I've been pretty happy with my trans cooling thus far (like 5 years now...damn time flies). Haven't seen trans temps over engine temps at any point I can remember, from 55-105* ambient.

I also run an older Derale fluid cooler similar to the first one, but also utilize the radiator tank. I do this mainly to help stabilize the temperature once the trans fluid reaches operating temp.

I think it was from your build thread that I think I got the idea for the derale fan cooler in the first place. I looked up the part # for the cooler you have and it is slightly bigger than the one I have. Vin63, The derale tech told me I should run the cooler I have with the radiator tank like you did because he said my cooler alone (the first link) would not be enough to cool a stalled 4l80e. So what do y'all think, am I just paranoid about using the radiator tank for transmission cooling? Everything I've read on the subject is real back and forth on whether you should use just a standalone cooler, or whether you should use a cooler along with the radiator tank. Some folks say in a performance application it's best to just use a standalone cooler, due to risk of coolant getting in your transmission lines which is the main thing that has me worried about using the radiator & cooler for transmission cooling. I definitely appreciate y'all getting back to me so quickly. I jut need to figure out if I should keep the cooler I have now and use it with the radiator, or return it and get the other model the tech recommended for standalone use. Thank y'all again! -Zak

Fyi.. I used to run a junk tube fin style cooler with the 4l80e and a 4,900 rpm verter. The trick is to lock the verter in second gear rifht away at <50% throttle and keep it locked. Trans temp while cruising were a mere 145-150* in 85* weather.
You can't create heat when it ain't slipping...
