A good start is to read the relevant Mar-K links here:
http://www.mar-k.com/installation_hints.aspx http://www.mar-k.com/faqs.aspx Then you may want to buy their instructions here: http://www.mar-k.com/Catalog/catalog.aspx |

Re: 71 chevy bed wood kit "tips & tricks"
I did all the staining first.Did both sides with a light sand in between coates.Took the box off and put it on standes so I could roll around on creeper under it.Put all together with the steel strips before you drill the outer bolts and fender bolts.I did not remove fenders just slid side boards under first. Was alott easier than I thought and turned out well. I used an 18 volt impact to tighten nuts from the bottom, you don't want to warp the strips,

So basically just hand tighting the nuts for the strips?

Hand tighten with lock tight.Using only lock washers,I had some of the nuts come loose. To keep moisture out of the wood,I agree with pre finishing the boards first ,on all sides & edges.

Also make sure to drill all your holes before you stain your wood.
