4x4 SM465 bell housing and dust cover color
Just finished my 465/205 rebuild and went through the various threads outlining factory transmission, bell housing, adapter and transfer case colors but did not see any info on the dust cover. The one I have has chevy orange on it but who knows if it was PO or factory.
As far as the bell housing Ive read natural, primer, orange and orange over spray, any more info out there as far as 4x4 variants? Any factory pics out there? Thanks in advance for any guidance. |

Can't answer your question but that's some beautiful hardware you've got there!

Re: 4x4 SM465 bell housing and dust cover color
When I did mine I did the same color they were when I pulled them, and on sm465 there was no remnants of orange or any other color.
bellhousing - natural dust cover - orange sm465 - natural xfer case adapter - natural np205 - orange

Re: 4x4 SM465 bell housing and dust cover color
On my 65 suburban the shield had no visible paint and the NOS cover for the TH350 I got a while back was also black.
The available NOS replacement parts for the 4 speed are also painted black from GM. Wonder if like everything else it varied from plant to plant including trans, bell housing colors |

Re: 4x4 SM465 bell housing and dust cover color
I got an inspection cover from a board member that looked to be original paint and it was black. I have also been under a friends all original c20 and his cover is also black.
My understanding has always been that the bell housing would have been overspray. I just painted mine Chevy orange. Looks like you nailed the red oxide for the 465. I just grabbed some primer at the local tractor store (rural King) and it is more brown. |

Re: 4x4 SM465 bell housing and dust cover color
thanks for the info. I bought two different red primers, one Rustoleum and the other Krylon. The Rustoleum was too brown like you mentioned and the Krylon was more orange and matched the original transfer case almost perfectly. The test area I sprayed on an extra case got rubbed down with some gear oil and that brought out a little bit more red and got it the exact color.

Re: 4x4 SM465 bell housing and dust cover color
I did a 67k10 back in the late 70's. its dust cover was black but the rest of the tranny and transfere case was rustoleul brown/red. a very close match. we had a good laugh about it being a rustoleum restoration. funny back them for another reason....because nobody was restoring these trucks back then. perhaps funnier still, now. because every time I buy aerosol spray paint from my auto parts store, the rep behind the counter always laughs and asks me what I'm restoring this time. It should be obvious... Pontiac blue, chevy orange, semi gloss black, cast iron grey, chrome silver. we're talking pebble beach concours. which pebbles and which beach I dunno?
