Trucks just sitting/rusting away
Doesn't it just piss you off to see trucks sitting and rusting away. And the owner won't sale them. There is 2 69-70 swb's within 5 miles from my house. A green one sitting outside rusting away they won't let go, it's been sitting for already 5 years and then a black one that I personally tried to buy before I bought my 67 that's been sitting under a shed for a good 15-20 years and has not moved in that whole timeframe.

Re: Trucks just sitting/rusting away
Don't I know it! I used to be an exterminator in Kinston, NC, and brother, I'd come across old vehicles like that all the time.
They refuse to sell and just let it rust away into junk. Maybe after they die the children will sell it. Seriously. |

Re: Trucks just sitting/rusting away
My buddies dad had a 68 SWB step side in his yard for years and I would ask about it all the time and he would just tell me to quit asking about it. One day I was hassling him about it and asking him why he would not sell it and just let it set and rot like it had been. It got under his skin and he told me that it was father's truck and would never leave his yard and could rot to the ground right where it sat and don't ever ask about it again. We got older we went our separate ways and I haven't seen my old buddy in years, but a few years back I passed by his dad's and the truck wasn't there any more.

Re: Trucks just sitting/rusting away
Not sure about anybody in particular but I know myself that there's a few vehicles here that will probably rust into the ground before I get yo them. It's not because I don't want to fix them but it's always hoping something will change and I'll find enough time to finally get it done. You know , after I hit power ball, retire and build my new 40 x 80 garage to restore all my cars in. If I lived closer to the street I'd have people stopping here everyday probably.

Re: Trucks just sitting/rusting away
There is a 1966 Chevelle Mailbu SS 396 4 Speed that I've tried to buy many times in town that is just sitting out in the elements wasting away, owner insists that he is going to restore it, going on 7 years now.

Re: Trucks just sitting/rusting away
A good friend has a Dodge Daytona with matching numbers sitting outside. Winter buried in snow, summer rains pouring on it but he travels all the time and is saving it for retirement. Body is shot anyways so he's looking for a donor. That doesn't keep folks from slamming him but it's his right to do with it what he wants and it will ultimately get done. Usually what happens is some idiot offers him a pitinence and expects his "higher use" to somehow sway him--not a chance. He gets a good laugh out of it....

Re: Trucks just sitting/rusting away
I have a couple of interesting cars that I have let rot away. Didn't store them correctly and had no intentions of working on them anytime soon. My cars, my loss.
I don't worry about what people are doing with their old cars and trucks.

Re: Trucks just sitting/rusting away
What made me think about this again was I had to go a certain way home and I saw the trucks still sitting. I knew they would be but I guess I was kind of hoping at least one of them wouldn't. There is a guy my dad knows with a 69 Z/28 sitting in a barn he will not get rid of. He told my dad that it was going to be his sons car but he never come back from Vietnam. So the car sits and will continue to sit

Re: Trucks just sitting/rusting away
What cars have I seen go that way?
In 1994 I noticed a 1967 Camero convertible under a tarp. It was always there until the tarp finally wore away. In 2000 I came that way again and it was still there, but the top had gone and the interior was completely shot. I found the owner and the old lady exclaimed "YOU HAVE THAT DISEASE TOO! YOU LIKE OLD CARS!" That was her husband's and he had refused to sell it until he was dead. She ad decided to give it to the grandchildren to "restore." Later I noticed it was gone. There is a 1973 Pontiac Grandville convertible that has been sitting outside at least 14 years. Apparently I'm not the only person to try and buy it. It has the rare rear defrost blower. The owner refuses to sell "saving it for the grandson." Backin 2000 I warned him, "if you don't get it inside your grandson won't be rich enough to restore it." If the vehicles were parked inside it wouldn't be too bad but outside, the UV rays and hot/cold cycles just destroy them. |

Same here. These trucks are very common. For every one that you see there's 50 more in the trees or behind buildings that you can't see. You could have a trillion dollars and hardly save half of them. Many get crushed up here still. Some people feel the same way about tractors, 150 year old barns with bad roofs or old gas pumps, all kinds of stuff sitting around You have to let them go Hard feelings and getting pissed off about someone else's business is a waste of time and worry If you can save some that's great but being sour about it when you can't will not help you any

Per my post above..... I'm sure some thought "yeah, sure"--well, here ya go. If I were restoring this I'd put the PBR sticker back on the wing!

Re: Trucks just sitting/rusting away
And another with a bit more snow to get people even more torqued up! Most everything of value on the car has been removed and is stored save for the wing. Nosecone and so on reside under lock and key.... and yes I believe that's his GTX slumbering next to it....

Re: Trucks just sitting/rusting away
I figure trucks are possessions and people can do with what they own whatever they want. I don't like seeing these taken off people's property, straight into a shop, hacked, cut chopped, and polished into a $40-60k show queen, but it's not my truck and they can do what they want and I'll do what I want. I've owned trucks for way longer than 5 years before tearing into it to turn it into something nice. My '67 project has been stalled at least that long sitting under a tarp. I hope I'm not pissing anyone off. Some of the body parts, including the cab, I have sat on for over 20 years. I figured it was mine to do what I wanted.

Re: Trucks just sitting/rusting away
I don't mind if it's on people's private property, but I have a story that pisses myself off big time. My uncle is kind of a hoarder, and my aunt HATES that he is. So he has a bunch of stuff lying all over his acreage, which is whatever. About 10-12 years ago someone from town asks to store a truck out at their place. My uncle quickly agreed, and my aunt reluctantly agreed as the owner said it would only be a few months till his new shop was built. Fast forward a decade after many inquiries about the truck at first, there it sits. This is where I come in. I've been ogling the truck since I was a young teenager. It's nothing fancy, just a regular '70 c10 long box, 2wd with a little 250. The box is very beat up, but the cab and forward is really nice and clean with no rust. I've been wanting to buy it for a year now, and only recently have I gotten his number. My aunt really wants it off her property, as she is trying to clean up and curb my uncles hoarding habits. I call up the guy, and he is almost shocked that I asked if he wants to sell it. He gave me the ol' answer "I was just clearing a place in my yard for it". I mentioned my aunt really wants it gone (truth and bargaining chip), but he insisted it would be gone within a couple weeks. A month later there it sits. That truck will never move. 🤔

Re: Trucks just sitting/rusting away
I tend to not worry about what someone is doing with their personal property. I've seen a few sad examples, but there are so many of the '67-'72s out there that it's no big deal. Heck, I think they were already rotting away at the dealerships when they were new!

I have a couple '72 Plymouth Dusters and a '73 Pontiac Firebird people ask about ALL the time. I'm sure they think they will never hit the road... maybe they're right!

Re: Trucks just sitting/rusting away
Yeah it bugs me too, but I guess I sorta became "that guy"....bought a '69 GTO basketcase in 2005, it sat in front of my old house until 2015, had no inside storage to work on it....at least I gathered parts while it sat. Finally this year I have a new place and a shop building, and it's coming apart at last! Plus, my Highlander gets to stay inside, too

Re: Trucks just sitting/rusting away
I tried to get my truck out of my Uncle's hands with genuine US currency when it was sitting in the driveway @ Grandma's, eventually leaving a nice orange stain on the concrete. 6 years later he coughed it up for free, but man, 6 less years out in the open, 6 more pre-kid years of time and money further along sure would have been nice.

Re: Trucks just sitting/rusting away
I had to sell off my hoard due to financial strife. But I had what I knew I would always want because I have always wanted them and they have always been a part of my life. The trucks were sitting because I was going to fix them up one day. That's right, some day and I hope to have a whole lot of "some days" the rest of my life, which is how long I plan on playing with my trucks. Gotta have 'em to build 'em.
I see some dude with a hot looking woman I'd like to be with. I don't see him giving her any affection. So, since he's not doing what I'd like to be doing should I go up and see if I can take care of that? (I've tried. Didn't turn out so good)
