1965 12 bolt rear drum backing plate part number
I have a 1965 12 bolt rear end and I dont have the backing plates for the rear drums. I am converting to 5 lug anyway, so will the 71-72 backing plates bolt up with the 5 lug drums? I cant find backing plates and my computer skills suck so i had my son search for them as well. if i could get a part number it would be a big help. If the 1971-72 stuff will bolt right up let me know.
Thanks in advance |

Re: 1965 12 bolt rear drum backing plate part number
'64-'87 truck backing plates will bolt up. You just have to have the correct backing plate and drums for the width of the shoes you plan to run. There are 2" and 2.75" wide shoes. Sorry but I do not have any part numbers. I do not know if the aftermarket offers backing plates for trucks this old. I have never had to buy any.

Re: 1965 12 bolt rear drum backing plate part number
5735814 Right side. 65-66
5735813 Left side. 65-66 3984868 Right supersedes the original numbers 65-75 with 2" brake shoes. 3984867 Left I have only parts books that go to 1975. It is possible that the numbers continue further than 75. Parts History Catalog states that they were discontinued in December 1981. Search in http://www.gmpartswiki.com/query for other applications. http://www.retruck.com/manuals/65-75...s-RearAxle.pdf

Re: 1965 12 bolt rear drum backing plate part number
When a part changes number there's generally a change in it's design. Capt has more experience than I so I'd try ordering some from a 1987 part number. In the GM Parts Book it can be found in 5.001 group number. In the older books they split the listing for the front and rear backing plates so be careful.
An interesting note in one of the Parts Books was a conversion of 1/2 ton brake parts to 3/4 ton parts. I would assume this was a heavy duty brake conversion.
