My 70 is a cst with all 89 compressor , motor wiring and all , can't seem to make ac work anyone know what all needs to be replaced or retro fitted?

I've been trying to find this but I can't I guess it isn't around. Does anyone have a list or a diagram that shows the 67-72 chevy/gmc AC system? I'm getting closer to AC an I just want to see what I have and what I need to get still. Also any of you that have the Pro6ten compressor Hooke up to the factory AC system, how well does it cool? I it make a difference or does it at least make turning the AC on worth while?

I have the Pro6ten compressor in my 72. It's quiet and smooth, considerably lighter than the A6 and bolts right in.

I'm running ES-12a Industrial (hydrocarbon) for now, and it cools pretty good. A couple threads that may be of help:

On the one below, the problem turned out NOT to be the compressor, expansion valve or the POA valve. It was simply the condensor, where the top fitting was, had "crimped" when it was tightened and cause a severe blockage.

I cannot even begin to describe the amount of money and time I spent trying to diagnose that simple problem. It was a brand new condenser, so my "thought process" was not even to focus there, but on everything else.

I have a new diverter box for the cab, which I need to put in. For now, I've been working on finishing up my '78 so I can put it up for sale. Then will focus back on my '72.

You might also check my '72 "build thread" in my signature. It's not really a build, just more of tinkering and trying to get things they way they should be. I may have some pics there of where the fan relay was replaced and a few other things AC related.

The steps in that first thread should help you get an idea of what to do. I played it pretty safe. To flush the system, I have an air compressor in my garage. I bought a "spot sandblaster" from Harbor Freight and added acetone (instead of sand, heh!), then hooked up a rubber hose to the nozzle and spray it through the system to flush it. Worked pretty well. The "spot sandblaster" is air powered, all contained unit with a cup where you would normally add sand, hook up to your compressor line. It was the only thing I could find where I could add acetone, then use my compressor to blast it and use a flush.

Be sure to get new o'rings. You can get those just about anywhere. HF has an o'ring kit with all sorts.

If you are going to run R134, you will need to adjust the POA valve. I've covered that in one of the threads above. Ultimately, I should do a fresh write up with pictures of everything. I spent way more than I would have if I had taken it in to be done, BUT...I wanted to learn this stuff. I don't have a lot of faith in relying on others, so I tend to be stubborn about learning things myself. Unfortunately, most of the time, it tends to be the hard way!

As I go. I'm going to use most
Of the factory system
Except for the compressor
And POA valve, going
To use the late model
Orifice tube system
Within the evaporator
Box, and use a R4 radial
Compressor. I'll have
To make some custom
Hoses, but that's the
Hard part. I made a template
For the firewall to
Mount everything
In the stock location.I can send you a copy
Of the template if you like. Let me know.

Curious for who used the stock compressor...how did you wire it to the vintage air wires? I have two coming from the stock unit which is from a 92 serpentine setup...

To Snipecastle2, I would not recommend the orifice tube. Six Pack Bee said it well.
I had one of these in a Chevelle and it was terrible. Ended up removing it and re-installing the POA with adjusted pressure setting and it works much better. If you still wish to use it. let me know and I will sell you mine cheap.

I already have the entire setup, but I'm probably going to run a vintage air unit, just because i just shaved my cowl vents and wanted to clean up the interior. thanks any ways!

Don't forget the bracket for the temperature control assembly mounting to the dash. I went and bought a Vintage air and a Craigslist ac temp control and tried to install...not cool found out there's a bracket!

I am also very stubborn and will tackle this myself and pay the extra $500. I have two trucks with serpentine systems and have fitted one with the SD5 Sanden. I will use the existing stock A/C with a new parallel condenser. I plan to run a trinary switch to operate a small aux fan on the condenser. I am going to buy a hose kit off ebay and a hose crimper. When I am finished and satisfied I will rent out the crimper to Members for free. Just fixed my wife's A/C in the Yota. Had to pull the whole dash to get to the evaporator. OUCH! Was just clogged with outside air debris. I told her to roll down the window next time she wants some outside air. Thought about removing that cable altogether...

I installed a factory looking unit but it has secrets. I swapped everything out for 134 a stuff and used a newer compressor. AC runs at 40* on 90* days here in SC.
I bought the 134 a stuff form Classic air group.

I also deleted the outside fresh air flapper on mine and it works great. I can still get fresh air by the windows are the drivers side kick panel.

That was to long ago to remember part numbers but if you call Original air group and tell them what year you have they will put you with the right stuff I'm sure. They did me anyway.
They put my truck on their catalog last year too!
